So I am in Chengdu on a 30 day L visa. I understand that getting an extension is no problem.

I have been offered a contract with a private langauge school. They say it will take a little time to get the Z visa, and that I should get an extension on my L visa. Then they will send me to Hong Kong to get a Z visa.

So my questions:

Is it still easy to get an extension on my L visa (I got it in Korea)?

How long does it take to get the paperwork for a Z visa organized?

Is it currently possible to change to a Z visa in Hong Kong (I have read so many different things on this that I am wondering how often the rules change)?

* u can extend your L visa twice at the PSB
* it takes about 6 weeks to process a Z visa
* it depends which country you are from (to get a z visa in HK)

note: most legal schools in China can change an L visa to a Z visa without having the foreign teacher leave mainland China

advise: double-check if your school is legal, or if it has the permit to hire foreign teachers, because if they do, it should be a problem for them to convert your L visa to Z without leaving China

Yeah I think the school is legal, it is part of a nationwide chain.

Sonnibarger: My experience mirrors yours, most schools cannot convert L to Z.

If they are sending him to HK .. it is not a conversion...likely they will just issue a letter .. L to Z conversions are allowed in some cases and it is the situation and not the locale tht is the determining factor...

In my area, it is very much the locale. The PSB says, "Don't even ask". Under no circumstances will the even consider it. They say they do not have the authority.

Someone mentions schools converted L visa to school visas, it is not the school that does any conversion, but government offices, which is probably what he meant to say. But that is the increasingly rare, not the common occurrence.

Just ask your school for a Z visa invitation letter before you arrive and you don't have to worry about arriving on a sketchy visa.

I dont doubt it...

This would be the standard answer given if they dont want to perform this service for a school... could it be that they just aren't telling you ... again from what I understand the L can be converted...

A lot of what people behind a desk tell you is nothing more than a reflection of their own ignorance. And they are ignorant, even stupid.

This pertains to not only visa issues. Try to get information at a bank sometime. Many of the people are ignorant about matters pertaining to foreign currency, for example. Rather than say "I don't know" or referring the customer to someone else, they will send you to the main branch, even though another employee in that branch may have all the information you need.

In the case of visas, you will often hear "It can't be done" or "Come back tomorrow" [when I'm not here]. What that means is I am too stupid, lazy incompetent, ignorant to do it. And since I'm in this position through an incredibly byzantine system of relationships and corruption which you will never understand, go F* yourself, laowai

Don't think for a minute that one of these morons would think twice about sending you to HK rather than get off his chair and ask someone who does know what to do.

Sorry pal, get your facts right. A 30 day L visa can be extended twice, each time for 30 days.
