Hi General Europe Forum,

I am wondering about marketability for CELTA vs TEFL, so thought I'd post this on the jobs forum. I am seeing far fewer job postings that required CELTA, and many more that want just TEFL (if that if you have a master's degree) or CELTA/ TEFL. Anyone care to comment?

Also, I'm finding that most accredited TEFL programs in Europe cost (course and materials and certification) about $2000, while CELTA course costs are about $2000 most places, but in Prague are $1200. Can anyone confirm?

The CELTA is good for the name, but if you can't afford it, find the next best thing.

CELTA and TESOL are more useful than all the others.

- look better
- well-regulated instruction

I did my CELTA in Prague, because it was the cheapest at the time I wanted to do it. I thought it was pretty good and in hindsight I would have regretted choosing an inferior course.

There was also a cheap option in Portugal too, but I forget which city..

I used to work in a language school with a failrly high turnover, and the administrators said that there was always a difference between the teachers who had completed the Trinity TESOL or Cambridge CELTA, so they developed a preference when hiring.

A lot of schools won't know the difference between an un- or a semi- accredited cert and a good one..

but they're probably only a little more expensive, no?

My "feeling" is that CELTA carries more weight

CELTA is the name brand basic newbie course, but there are some generics out there that are equivalent. However, it is a point that employers will trust the name brand cert.
