I'm leaving Japan and my company said they could make a final adjustment to my tax statement if I don't plan to work in Japan anymore They said I need to sign a paper to promise I won't work in Japan after I quit. What are the implications if I work for another company for a few days after signing the paper? I'm not sure about how the tax laws work here so any advice would be helpful.

They can't legally ask you to sign such a document! Pass. Just get your tax forms forwarded.

Thanks for the reply. I thought it was a bit strange since they've been upfront about everything else. When you say 'forwarded', you mean to my home country? My current status is a 'non-resident' of Canada. When I return to Canada, will I need my final tax statement from my company?

Yes, I meant forwarded to your home in Canada.

Will you need it? Probably, if you plan to file Japanese taxes.

Nothing. It's not a legal stipulation. If you work for another company, whether you signed such a paper or not, there's nothing they can do about it. It's nothing more than a scare tactic.
