Hi everyone. This is my first post here. I've actually been a fan of this site for a long time. Anyway, I'm asking for some general advice. I want to begin working in China this autumn. I will begin sending out applications to schools, applying for FT positions in Beijing. Does anyone have any general advice, i.e; things they wish they had done before coming to China regarding contracts or visa problems?
I have a B.A. ( in Spanish actually).
I am a native English speaker.
I am from the U.S.
I am 26 years old
I have about 6 months teaching experience in the U.S. as a teaching assistant.
I have another 6 months as a volunteer ESL teacher.
I have advanced Mandarin Language skills.
Thanks everyone! |

Before you go, just make sure you ask the school for the direct phone number of an American/Brit/Aussie/etc. who currently teaches at that school. Then talk to that person. By phone. |

Start applying early to schools. If you want to work at a uni then you should be ready to go by the end of August. |

Read the other threads for the things you should bring from home. It is important to have a job lined up ahead of time. Staying in any city can be expensive, Beijing especially. Many Chinese believe that all foreigners are rich. You will be directed only to expensive hotels.
When you do have a job, arrive early enough to get over jet-lag and find out where things are. Good luck. I hope you enjoy China as much as I did. |

I appreciate everyone's advice. I will definitely heed to it. I am in the process of finalizing my resume and will send it out in a few weeks for the autumn semester. Does this seem too late?
I'm hoping for a relaxed university job with a six month contract ( maybe I am asking for too much considering my qualifications). I am aware they do not pay as much, but I just want to get settled first.
I actually spent a year in China studying, but I never taught, so this aspect of the China experience is new to me. If anyone has any questions about living and studying in China I would be happy to answer them. And sooner than later I hope to give back in terms of job advice.
Thanks |

I would start contact schools by May then. This is when many universiites ask the current teachers if they will re-contract. |
