Hi there.
New recruit to the ESL teaching world here. I'm making a move from 25 years of IT consulting, training, coaching etc into something hopefully a little more mentally rewarding.
Now - on to two of my many questions.
Does anyone have experience obtaining work through HJ Consultancy in Vietnam? Heather is recommended by the ATA in Australia (they run TESOL courses) however I am getting conflicting information from Saigon locals about obtaining a job before I arrive.
Heather says it's not legal in Vietnam to sign a contract before arriving, and my local friends are worried about me arriving without having already tied up a job.
Now, I imagine most of you guys have already been through this, so how does it really work in Vietnam, and if I am to start directly contacting schools where should I begin to obtain work in teaching Business or IT English and perhaps even IELTS/TOEFL (maybe I should get some experience before I teach that, though...)
Looking forward to some much needed advice from the men and women on the ground.
Thanks
Steve. |

A lot of criticism towards the person above, mentioned and their program.
I would avoid any dealings with the above person and organization. |

Thank you Tanker. Are you or anyone else able to offer details regarding that criticism?
I ask because she comes highly regarded back here in Australia.
Thanks |

Highly regarded by who?
By former students of the program? By former teachers? |

By the organisation - ATA.
I have background knowledge on this, nor any connection with her group - simply stating the very little I know.
Rather than asking me questions, perhaps you could help me out by letting me in on what you know, seeing as it is me needing the help. So far you haven't offered me any examples of why to avoid her. I like to understand things, not react blindly on the basis of no evidence.
I want to making educated decisions about the right process to follow.
Thanks |

Here's to making educated decisions about the right process to follow. Hope these forums can help me do that.

Thanks for the info. ATA is an organization.
Not former students, nor employees .
I sent you a PM.
As for Vietnam I can only give you my opinion with is similar to many others at this time.
Teachers are not leaving VN. More teachers are coming. Schools are cutting hours, there is more competition for jobs. People coming to Vietnam will probably be working part-time at 3 schools to make ends meet, unless you get hired by the large language factory in town, which is spreading out hours thinly because they have over-hired.
Best of luck. |
