Most employers in the Gulf are hiring teachers for every academic year. Teachers are usually on 2 year contracts and for many, it is time to move on - many expat teachers tend to have a nomadic spirit and like to try new places. For others, the employer for one reason or another doesn't want to renew. But, it is expensive for employers to bring over new teachers, so employers are not going to fire people for nothing. (although the "something" may be an incompatibility with management. Laughing)

Saudi schools are all segregated by gender, so naturally they will ask you if you are male or female. Nationality (passport) all too often decides what you are paid at some employers. If you have a North American or European passport, your pay may be higher. Also, whether she is a native speaker or not matters. (I am assuming that you are not a native speaker?)

If your friend hasn't heard anything, it could mean that they are not interested or it could mean that they are just inefficient - as is common. She should send them an email and ask them. No one here can tell you for sure the reason for the delay... just that it is not unusual.

But, PMU/Khobar has a bit of a reputation for having an HR department that is more inefficient than most. The most extreme of its errors has meant that people have accepted jobs... even got as far as Bahrain to wait for the visa... and PMU then backed out on the offer because they decided that they had enough teachers already. So, buyer beware - especially if a family is involved. There could still be problems in their system.

The vast majority of the female faculty has reportedly given notice and won't return.

Ask questions. And demand honest answers.

Remember, there are a lot of schools in the Gulf hiring right now.

In Saudi Arabia, you won't be able to drive or drink or go out uncovered. I understand that in some regions you can get away with not covering completely, but even older women get harrassed by the bands of young men roaming the malls.

The young single women who I have talked to who have worked there have either a partner, or have been seriously harrassed. And that is when they are well covered.
