I know a few people who have private students. It's fine to make some extra money but you'd really need a sponsored source of income or be the spouse of someone with a job.

Most teachers in the private and public system tutor after school. It bumps up their incomes. Difficult to get tutoring opportunities if you're not working though because you need to be in a school to get the clientle.

Some employers don't like you giving private lessons. For example UAEU. Best to find your private students by word of mouth if you have a job: don't advertise. There's nothing to stop you advertising if you are sposnored by your spouse though. Some teachers in private schools earn more through private lessons than they do through the day job - but they really put the hours in.

I tutored some ---- it paid fairly well (180 AED/hour).

I did have a couple of rules:
- I did not tutor students of the opposite gender
- I did not tutor students that I taught
- I avoided tutoring students students from my own institution.

You never know who you'll meet doing a tutoring gig ---- a friend of mine ended up being a private tutor in one of the big palaces in AD (I wasn't that lucky, unfortunately).

Be aware that some employers specifically disallow outside employment of any kind, including private lessons. Check your contract, observe what the other teachers are doing, and probably be discreet.

My rule #1 for private tuition is to collect at the beginning of every lesson. Do not run a tab... Cool

Yes. Most if not all colleges will have a conflict of interests clause in their contract. I'd say if you were caught, you'd be spoken to rather than fired. Keep whatever you're doing a tight secret.

It sounds like most people have clauses in their contracts so say that they can't work anywhere else, however it also seems that most teachers if not all have a few side students!

NCTBA,

Do you run an underground ballroom dance class as your side business? Or perhaps selling vegan, gluten free falafels is more your style. Very Happy

Dear NCTBA,
So, you're running a service station on the side.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_S1W3JqHGyUQ/SK2jHLYQdKI/AAAAAAAAFs0/WXfOgkqZ604/s1600-h/ENOC1.jpg

You must be, because surely you're not referring to another kind of "servicing":

"The situation makes me kind of nervous.
Yes, I rise up from her arms, she says "I guess you call this love";
I call it service."

Regards,
John
