Hey there,
I'm wondering about Teacher Trainer jobs and if anyone has any suggestions about how I might go about finding this sort of work from another country?
I'm on the verge of finishing my studies towards this and plan to move to South America in a few months. Since my preferred destination is Ecuador, I need to get a job sorted out before I arrive for visa purposes. I realise this position would be easier to find had I got some knowledge of the area and contacts through working there beforehand, but I like a challenge!! Any suggestions for the best plan of action??
Thanks in advance for any ideas that you might have! |

There are, but I think they're found through contacts, I've yet to find any.
Usually you need five years teaching experience though. Try emailing tefl training schools. |

Thanks for your reply, Naturegirl.
I've got the experience but it's the contacts and local knowledge that I'm lacking. Also, as these jobs are so few and far between, I didn't know if there was something I was unaware of when looking for this type of work, but maybe there isn't... The search continues! |

Hi JRS,
I'm sending you a PM. What kind of qualifications do you have?
Best,
Justin |

Southern Cross Teacher Training trains CELTA trainers on its courses if you have the Cambridge DELTA or equivalent. The process is to apply to the center by contacting the director, who will then apply to Cambridge University for approval. The training requires about 100 hours of work on your own with the trainer responsible for your certification, and then working on a course with two senior trainers who are approved to train other trainers. |

I've been in touch with them and a member of staff there has been very kind and helpful, but my TEFL cert is Trinity, not CELTA, so I'm not eligible!
I've got a PGCE in teaching adult ESOL and I'm doing a course with IH specifically to teach on TEFL courses so I've been speculatively emailing language schools... |

Well the problem is more that you are TESOL and Southern Cross is a CELTA center. This creates difficulties with getting the approval from Cambridge, though it's not impossible. I am the trainer at Southern Cross I would recommend that you contact Trinity and School for International Training TESOL centers. SIT is expanding rapidly and probably needs to train up trainers. The IH Cert isn't going to go anywhere I don't think, though IH World Organisation is pushing it. The great majority of IH schools that offer TT are CELTA centers. There isn't much of a market for the IH Cert. |

Thanks for your reply - unfortunately there are no Trinity centres in Ecuador, so that's pretty much out of the question!
The SIT course has been suggested and I've been looking into it - it does seem like a very comprehensive course and the fact that I could pay for it as I went along makes very practical.
I guess it's about finding a school with a vacancy for a new teacher and doing it however they require! |
