Hello all. I will be travelling to Santiago, Chile in July and have work secured at a hostel. Although this is without pay, my accomodation is free and will give me a good base to look for jobs.
I only have a 20hour TEFL course and an English Honours Degree, which I have been told is ok, but that it will not secure me the best work.
However, I'm going to fly over and see how I get on
I was looking for advice with regards to how you go about finding work when you are over in a foreign country. I speak very little spanish but will try to change this slightly before I arrive. Any advice on methods of applying for jobs would be great!
Any advice on what kind of pay I would expect would be great also!
Thanks a lot

Try to talk to others, there's a CHile forum, that should help. Get names of institutes and addresses and knock on doors. The yellow pages is good too. |

I think your approach is better than mine when I was looking for work in Chile. Completely disregarding all of the advice I got here at Dave's, I secured a job beforehand with one of the few schools that interviews & hires from abroad. When I got there not only did I discover that there were TONS of schools (you just have to knock on doors with your CV in hand, as naturegirl said), but my school was awful--people already in the country seemed to know that, which was probably part of the reason they hired from abroad.
Your 20-hour course won't help you very much, since the standard is 100+, and Chile is a rough place to improve your Spanish because of the accent, slang, etc. Still, I'm sure you can find something. You've at least got your accommodation temporarily sorted out, which will save you time and money while you're job-hunting. Good luck!
