OK, no-one else has replied so....
I don't have direct experience but 'have heard':
The company is new to AD. The pay is good (I don't know exact figures) but instead of 'normal teaching' you are re-training the existing English teachers (usually expats Arabs) so I don't know how you feel about that. Accomm is currently in shared large villas in a compound in Mohamed Bin Zayed city, i.e. off the island. |

Thanks for your response, veralynn. I couldn't decide whether no news was goods news or not! I've been shortlisted by them and I'm waiting for further news, so thought I'd better try and find out a bit more about the company. This thing about sharing a villa and living 'off island', is that normal/good? I've never been to the Middle East and it would all be completely new to me. I'm currently in Spain. Anyway, if anything comes of it, I might get back to you! Thanks again! |

Sharing a villa is neither normal, nor IMHO good. It would be an immediate deal breaker for me because, to me, sharing housing with strangers is for college students. Living off island is a reflection of cost and housing availability... much depends on the housing location in relation to the employer and how they expect you to get back and forth.
Both of these are normally a situation of the lower tier employers. It depends on your CV whether this is appropriate for your credentials. For instance, if you have an MA or if you have teacher certification from your home country, plus a few years of related experience, you probably shouldn't be dealing with an employer who only provides shared housing.
So, it comes down to whether you think the pay is enough to deal with these negatives.

Well, a year ago I would have said "no" but housing has become such an issue in AD that now it seems that anything goes. One thing I do know for sure about Edunova is that they did have problems finding accommodation for their staff and that this was the best option they could find. I honestly don't think that they are "lower tier employers". I believe the villas are spacious and the compound a nice one but as VS said - it would kind of make me feel I'm back at college. But....if you're young and single maybe it would be better for you than being by yourself in a one-bed flat? I don't know, only you can decide that. Also, just because that's where their staff are currently housed doesn't necessarily mean that is what they will offer you - you will have to ask them in interview. Keep us informed! |

Sharing a villa is fine for most. VS doen't like it. For most however, it is a normal situation if you live in London, New York, Paris, Madrid, or the big cities and you don't have a mortgage. The benefits also include the avoidance of loneliness which is a big factor for new people - sharing costs, transport, food etc..
All of the villas have their own bathroom and quite often two kitchens. If it is a compound then there might even be leisure facilities. |

And not having to share accommodation is a major reason why many people choose the UAE ahead of London, New York, Paris or Madrid. |

Money is why 99% people stay in the UAE. If you are new and single or married without kids you take what comes. Sharing has many benefits and for some it is a non-starter. For a new person who may not know a soul, sharing can be an ideal start till you know what choices there are and then you can decide what housing you prefer. I know many people who share in the UAE and prefer to share. It cuts down on costs considerably and if, like 99%, you are here for only 2 or 3 years to save as much as you can so that you cand get a mortgage or start a business you live somewhere else on less pay, then sharing makes more sense than not. |

Thanks for all the comments. I haven't heard anything else since being told I was shortlisted, so, not sure what the situation is at the moment. However, I am making a determined effort to find employment in the UAE, so, hopefully, one way or another, all the information will be of use to me at some point! |

ludhilltoysoldier, have a look at this one-page document (if you haven't already). http://www.edunova.ca/eng/pdf/TeachAbroad_AbuDhabi4.pdf It gives a bit more info than the ad on another website.
Does anyone know if this project might be related to the MAG schools? The pdf doc says that the positions are at schools in Khalifa A and Al Samha. Which schools might these be? |

Sharing may be okay if you are able to choose your roomates; however, in most cases in the UAE, you do not have that luxury. You will most likely be thrown in with a complete stranger and that can prove disastrous.
After a hectic day at work, the last thing you want is to come home to a crazy roomate. I would never opt for shared accommodation. |

Marquess, Were you shortlisted before or after filling in the questionnaire? How long ago was that and have you heard anything further? If you don't mind me asking! Ludhill |
