Is it easy/possible/cheap to get a vcr player in Japan that will play tapes from the U.S. - I think recorded in ntsc format?

Some DVD recorders/players have both functions.

Otherwise, just look in any recycle or secondhand shop.

You drink beer Ben, no time for videos. Unless it's a video about drinking beer.

Thanks! Well, I drink beer, too, but it is usually while watching a video Smile It is good to know about the second hand bins in Japan. Do their VCR's play western videos also? The U.S. uses NTSC signals on our videos. China uses PAL. What about Japan? Will their players handle NTSC - at least to read from, and then play on their tv's?

Japanese video players play American-made video tapes, yes.

"Bins"? You mean shops, right?

I'm sure you can still find VCRs at the larger electronics stores (Bic Camera, Yodobashi Camera, Yamada, etc).
I checked www.biccamera.com and found VCR/DVD player from LG for 9,980 (DVCR-B300).
Keep in mind, the DVD player is region 2 so you only be able to watch DVDs from Region 2 countries (Japan, Western and Central Europe; Western Asia; Israel, Iran, Egypt, South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho; United Kingdom, Turkey, French overseas territories). Region-free players are also available if you check around.

Players will automatically be NTSC, and region free players with PAL playback are all you should consider. Lots of places carry them. Remember that the TV will also need PAL playback capability.

I just found that out the hard way. Bought some region free xbox 360 titles, wacked them into my uk xbox and was like... what's with the black and white?! Luckily I also have a Japanese 360 (or two... possible soon to be 3... long story) which I'm using until I can be bothered to get down to a shop to buy a decent LCD TV.

I'm assuming that I'll have the same issues using the HD coloured plugs (I forget the name of that connection, but I mean the cables other than the white, red and yellow ones). But if I play things through a VGA port on a TV/monitor, do I still have to worry about the PAL vs NTSC thing?

No, if you can use the vga standard, pal and ntsc are irrelevant. You may still have region issues on the actual player.
