49 year old American, 3 years of university transcripts but NO DEGREE. TEFL certificate and 7 years experience teaching esl at all levels in Jakarta, Indonesia. I would be going to Oman in the next couple of weeks, arriving on a tourist visa and searching for a job, sponsorship, and a working visa.??

Language schools come under the Ministry of Manpower - same rules apply.

Language schools/Private schools are regarded as the same.

Much better to arrange the job before you go, Muhammad. I suggest you get in touch with Abdul Majid Majali. He has wasta with the Ministry and has gotten jobs for some pretty shady characters. If you are a Muslim, that will certainly help your case.

What I meant was that Majali has gotten jobs for people with only a three-year technical degree instead of a regular BA, for example. Not that having only a three-year degree automatically makes you shady, but the one I have in mind is. You can search Dave's for gossip on some of Majali's hires. I think Steppyboy claimed to have worked in Sohar with some nutcases hired by Majali. Majali's recruiting methods are pretty cavalier and careless, but for somebody who may be a good teacher without having the sheepskin, it's nice to have somebody like Majali around.

Majali's hiring process (expecially in Sur) is highly suspect. It is a well known fact that their is a teacher on staff claiming to have a PHD when in fact his entire credentials from BS to PHD are bogus. Credentials are not checked or scrutinized. This will change next year I'm sure as the Ministry will become much more involved in the hiring process.

Not likely! The arm's length realtionship between contractors and Ministries is a mutualy beneficial one. For the contractors there is money to be made and more flexibility in 'catch and release'. For the Ministries the economy is there in addition to avoiding the employ of expats as civil servants and payment of all the employee perks (salary being the least of these) that entails. In Oman as any where in the world 'a government job' (civil service) is a treasured thing for its security. A private contract is 'time limited' and much easier to terminate in that it just lapses; whereas, a civil service contract is ongoing and carries with it the concept of 'due process'. Contractors are here to stay.

You have to distinguish between mere recruiters and contractors. Majali has recruited for the Ministry of Higher Education and just handed the teachers over for a Ministry contract. I'm not sure whether he also does contracts outright. Most of the private contractors in Oman also seem to be too lazy to do their own recruiting.
