So the title says it all, I'd like any information from those of you teaching in Taiwan on any of the topics mentioned in the title of this post!
1. Any observations on how this recession may effect or is already effecting the ESL market in Taiwan?
2. How bad has the Taiwanese economy been hit compared to other popular Asian ESL destinations like S Korea, Japan, Vietnam, etc?
3. What are current salaries like for white male newbs with unrelated Masters degrees and CELTAs?
4. Are there any/many jobs available for newb ESL teachers with CELTA's?
5. What cities/towns offer the best prospects at the moment in terms of a balance between jobs/salaries and quality of life?
6. Is there a preference for US or UK English at the hiring stage?
Any info from those of you 'on the ground' would be greatly appreciated. Thanks =) |

For kids schools, student numbers appear down island-wide. I've heard rumors that many schools have cut back, and some have closed (mostly small operations).
For adult learning, there seems to be people going back to study English if they can't get work they want. So in some cases (not all) the adult market is holding up... maybe? That's just my impression.

Pretty hard. However, the stock market here has been recovering, so perhaps times are not all bad.

I'm not one, so can't comment, sorry.....

CELTA seems well regarded over here as far as qualifications go. But a lot of schools place more emphasis on experience in the classroom and on image.

Kaohsiung, Taichung, maybe Hsinchu? Taipei seems saturated to me.

US English preferred in most cases. UK is fine, as long as your accent is not "too strong" (which is probably entirely subjective). Lots of Brits here, so usually not a problem I guess.
Hope that helps.
