From the article linked by Samantha:

A mysterious and "severe" respiratory illness has surfaced in parts of Mexico and may be affecting some Canadians who recently vacationed there.

I was seeing stories about this in the Canadian news for several days this week, and then suddenly it exploded here with todays suspension of all classes in Mexico City and surroundings.

A relative in the public education system tells me the rumour there is that this flu came from Canada, but I think the rumour has distorted the events: the sequence of news stories seems to point rather to news of the illness in Mexico breaking first in Canada before it did here.

My husband was watching the morning national news and he informed me that the news is reporting it was Canadians and Americans who brought the illness to Mexico. So that must be where that take on the story is coming from. Wherever it came from, I hope everyone who has it will be okay. We both have been feeling a little under the weather the past few days, but supposedly the flu hasn't been reported in the coastal areas and we are chalking it up to seasonal colds (as the Mexicans say...the change of climate).

If you search Google News Mexico for "influenza porcina canadiense" you'll get a bunch of conflicting stories, even from the major mainstream sources. According to many Spanish language stories, it was Canada who first detected this disease in a Canadian who had recently returned from Mexico, and it was Canada who then alerted Mexico. But the English language sources tend to say that there are no cases in Canada, and that it was the Mexican authorities who notified Canadian authorities.
