This October, Ill be returning to full-time study. However, Id still like to continue teaching or doing other TEFL-related activities part-time and am interested in online employment possibilities. Unfortunately, I know nothing of online teaching, so Id like to fire out a few questions at those in the know:
Which employers are worth considering? i2i/My English Teacher is hiringare they decent employers?
I've heard bad things about TutorABC. Any others to watch out for?
How difficult is it to teach through a computer?
If its important, I have 12 yrs TEFL experience, with CELTA + DELTA + MA in English Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics.
Thanks in advance,
Chris |

Hey what happened to all of those links to online teaching sites? I was interested in checking them out as well. That link no longer exists. |

Sorry, I don't know - you spend a fair amount of time contributing, then the thread gets pulled: heavy-handed moderation ? Or did the user request it be pulled due to having said something untoward, his/her bosses getting wind of the fact they were unhappy ?
Doesn't make you want to post links and advice, though, if you're not told ...

Hm that's a bit strange .. seems like just posting links with no commentary one way or another is harmless. If the person that posted it originally sees this, could you PM that list to me? I'd appreciate it. |

I think it was me posted "the list" - but I can't remember what the original post was about. I'm active in several fora and have appalling short-term memory in any case :-S

I'll post a few links from a website with which I am familiar, and let you and the moderators decide if this is appropriate:
http://www.briteschool.co.uk/Links'other.htm
Links to online schools (not including Briteschool) - not TEFL, though, and probably only none of them actively recruiting (Nisai may be, at a guess - can't find jobs listed there, though).
Others:
http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=language+school+online&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a
loads ! Google them.
The more reputable ones teaching live lessons will be using Elluminate or iLinc software; asynchronous (distance-learning) colleges will be using Moodle (Open Source) at best, or Blackboard (proprietary) - or possibly Interact (cheap and effective and implemented for the establishment, rather than requiring specialist skills and lots of time like Moodle).
If this gets deleted, I'd like to know why |

Id like to comment on TutorABC. I am a westerner currently living in Taiwan and working for the company locally. I know that TutorABC isn't perfect, but its definitely not a scam. TutorABC has quite a large operation in Taichung, Taiwan and is only one branch of a large and respected English Language company here in Taiwan.
Personally, I have had a pleasant experience with the company and plan to continue working for them remotely once I move back to the US. While the cultural divide certainly makes working for a Taiwanese company challenging at times, in general, TutorABC has a good group of well-intentioned people working hard to help a company through some growing pains.
There is a new online forum for consultants and prospective employees to talk about the company, ask questions... etc. If you're interested in TutorABC or already working for them, check it out at http://alliancetutorabc.ning.com/ |
