Well, your reference of salary will be what you will get in UK for your PhD and experience.
So, let's do some simple mathematical calculations:
1. in UK:
A PhD with 5 yrs experience will be in the 'Lecturer/Senior lecturer ' scale (depending on the type of university - old vs new univ): yearly salary range [30,000 - 46,000] (of course before tax!]
2. Your UAE offer: a PhD + 5 yrs experience, the salary offered is: 25000/5.377 around 4649 /m , so your yearly salary (no tax) is: 55793 which is outside the UK salary range, knowing that in UK you will not get the top scale unless you have more than 10 years experience, plus promotion!
So, you have to calculate the difference between what you will get in UK and the UAE salary (DH25,000), and see if the difference is worth taking, especially if you have a mortgage to pay in UK and other hidden expenses.
If I were you, I will negotiate the salary based on the above logic, and push for higher one to reflect UK standard of living expenses!
Good luck. |

If half of the AED25K is for accomodation, travel, etc. allowances - then it's not very good for your quals + experience.
The more desireable places will pay circa 18000AED and then the accomodation (they provide - you do not have to seek it out) tickets, furniture allowance, education (if you have children) etc. |

I second the comments of the two above posters. helenl's quote is essentially what I was offered, and I'm very happy with it. Once I did the math to account for income tax deductions here at home, I figured that I'll be earning as much as a full professor's net wages (and then some)!
Exceptions aside, no one in her sane mind would turn down such an offer. |

Does that salary include or exclude annual r/t airfare? The AD oil company raised salaries, but no longer pays r/t airfare. The higher salarly works nicely for a single person. |

Best of luck with the re-negotiation! May Hermes be with you (besides delivering mail to Zeus, I think he's the Greek god that mediates b/w Olympus and humanity...) |

Why is it obvious from your name that you have a Ph D?
Jeez - another gifted intellectual wondering if it's worth lowering themselves to come to the UAE.
Aint we the lucky ones.

Which of course tells us nothing whatsoever unless you tell us about your 'particular situation'.
Suffering from a sunshine deficit situation?
Need more salt in your shower water?
Have a teenager who is hoping to qualify for the sand boarding olympics?
Oh, do tell. |

Hey D... are you picking on the newbie?
He didn't say the PhD was obvious. He said that he had a PhD and that the field was obvious from his screenname... which is "linguist" ...
I could be wrong, but I'm thinkin' that he has a PhD in linguistics... but I've been wrong before. Of course, here I am assuming that this is a "he" and it could be a "she" ...

OOps - you're right on that point VS.
Still I stand by the gist of my post.
There seem to be a few newbie intellectuals on this board who aren't sure if they can lower themselves to work in our part of the world these days.
'Indisputable Top Cat', for example, seemed more to me like 'Benny the Ball[s]'
I don't think it's the quenchless thirst for intellectual credibility that persuades people to eventually decide on the UAE.
Do you? |

Well, for what it's worth, I for one am one of those "newbie intellectuals," but one who's going to the UAE for the excitement and cultural experience of it, not just filthy lucre. The UAE university I'll be going to was also my first choice among the other universities (all North American) I interviewed with. I know the UAE is no utopia, but neither is this politically correct morass that I currently live in. |

^^ good for you, ana.
Please don't misunderstand me - and good luck!
I'm glad you're not coming here for the 'filthy lucre'.
That's made by the partners of (some of) us linguists, obviously.
I hope you made the best of the myriad of choices available to you.

Wow - I had no idea what nastiness I would encounter on this board. Thanks again to those who responded to my original question - your insight was helpful. |

Dear Linguist_in_UK,
Unfortunately, in my 30+ years of teaching experience in four countries, I've seen that you can find nasty people everywhere. But it may be true that you'll find more than average in the Middle East since individuals who might go there as polite and considerate sometimes end up bitter and rude. And that's NOT because of something in the water there.
Regards,
John |
