Hey, I am currently living and teaching in Chile but the summer slump is coming up and I am curious if anyone knows summer job opportunities...teaching or otherwise.

Thanks for your help!

this is something I am curious about as well - not so much a current job opportunity but are there various types of side jobs available for people to work during the summer? I am moving to Santiago in May 2009 to teach english and can't help but think ahead....

haha... nope. (though dont take my laugh to mean that i'm not facing the same problem) well there have been 250 page views and nobody replied with any suggestions. thats probably not a great sign.

not that its impossible to find work during the summer, but its obviously talked up as a problem for a reason.
privates? make sure there arent any institutes needing more teachers, volunteer! everybody loves a volunteer and there are lots of issues that have local groups that may benefit from an extra hand.

(ps lunkey... May isn't summer here. you'll be getting here at a great time to find a job. are you getting worried about the summer a year from now? you should be fine in working something out with that much time to think ahead)

I no longer live in Chile....but I was there last summer and my suggestion for summer work is....don't.

It really is a complete waste of your time, you have so few hours that you might as well just bite the bullet and go travel Peru/Bolivia. Take out a loan from home if you have to, but you'll be lucky to make 300,000 pesos a month working in the summer, you can expect more like 200,000. And it isn't as though you just work Monday and Tuesday and then have 5 days off. It's 1-2 classes per day so you can't get out of town but don't make any money.

We didn't believe that it would REALLY die off like everyone said it would....and in reality it does. So my suggestion is to bust out the credit card and take a trip!

Or look into doing a Winter Camp in South Korea...there are camps that are so desperate they often fly you in for a month, and fly you back, and you can make a few thousands dollars in just one month with free lodging.

thanks for the tips! yeah Dia I know May isn't the summer, but I guess I'm looking ahead to what things will be like come December (yes I know a year away Laughing). I just know that time will fly, and I won't start actually working till the beginning of July after I complete the June course at the tefl academy.

and mike - interesting idea to go to Korea for a month, but that takes you away from the South American summer! something to think about though for sure...

I am trying to figure out how the heck to get out of Korea and appreciate the fact that you might consider coming here for a camp in December or January...BUT remember it is colder than (what is a word I can use here and not get busted but correctly portray the winter for what it is in Korea)...

I only recommended the camp in Korea as an alternative to accumulating debt and traveling. Personally I think that a 2 month vacation is the best thing to do in the Chilean summer because teaching during that time really is a waste of your time. The Korea gig would only be a smart option for people who really don't have a couple thousand dollars to get through the summer with.

Yeah, I hear where you are coming from and while I hope to never have to come back to Korea (even again)...there might be a time where money is tight and I have to make that decision. For this reason I don't really want to burn my bridges in Korea...but I don't want to stay, either. Working conditions have really gotten bad in the past few years where public schools opperate more like Hagwons (private evening schools) and people are taken advantage of on a routine basis, racism is alive and well and sexual harrassment is through the roof, they limit our travel with ridiculous quarantine threats and demand ridiculous things at the last minute. It is like they are trying to set us up for failure, in my opinion. But to just make some money for a couple months I can see people putting up with a lot and not caring cause they are "outta there" as soon as they get paid. Best of luck to you all...hope to find a way to join you soon....culture, weather, language, food, and people in Chile all interest me very much.

billietea - what do you know about the English Villages in Korea? I'm trying to decide between working at one next year or going to Chile. I haven't seen any current posts about EV's on the Korean Job Forum.

mike - do you know anything about the TEFL Academy in Santiago?

Thanks for any info on either!

English villages in Korea...I haven't worked in one...I am a bit older...37 and while I qualified at the age of 35 I don't now (as per the recruiter). It is really all about entertainment.

Are things really that bad in Chile that you would consider coming to Korea?
