I am considering living in the AD and am trying to find a good standard to gauge the cost of living. I have read many sites and they give costs of housing and other "big ticket" items but I haven't found anything on food.

How much does it cost to order a set meal in McDonalds? i.e. a big mac, fries and coke? not that I want to but I thought this might be a good way to compare the costs of living.

How much is:

rice

flour

chicken thighs? boneless?

yogurt

ground beef

tomatoes

apples

squash

chocolate chips - maybe one of the most important items Wink

I would really be interested in looking at websites for supermarkets but all i have found when googling was street addresses for them.

Is it necessary when living in Abu Dhabi to buy a car?

Gulf News regularly publishes prices of key foodstuffs. Try searching their site http://www.gulfnews.com/home/index.html It's not the easiest archive to search but you'll probably find what you want if you persist.

People tend to buy at certain shops and so pay more or less than each other.

Spinneys is about 30-50% more than the Co-op (depends on products
Carrefour is about 15% more than the Co-op
The co-op is your best bet

Family of 5 (friends) would spend about 12-1500 per week
Single starting from 500 upwards

Would you include going out as food expenses?

you can eat for less than $10 a day if you wish

Thanks! I usually only eat out when socializing. In the U.S. eating out usually means eating too much salt, sugar, fat and, in general, just too much food. I am not sure about food in the middle east - I will have to play it by ear if i ever get there.

Which is why you asked about McD? Laughing You can actually eat out cheaply if you like Indian food - and it can be very healthy.

Can't wait to eat mounds of delicious, fresh dates! Smile

I hope all falafels are plentiful too...
