Hi there

I am a recently graduated TESL teacher from Canada. I have an upcoming interview to teach in Abu Dhabi, and am wondering if anyone has experience with bringing a spouse there. I know that he can get a visa, but I've been told that there can be a lot of discrimination, especially against people who are not originally from Western countries or white...He is qualified teacher in Guatemala, so maybe he will be able to teach there as well (e.g. Spanish...if there is a demand for it). Does anyone have any ideas/tips?

Thanks!!

The better K-12 international schools (those that pay in full, on time, sometimes benefits and usually valid documentation) follow various curriculums including but not confined to: British, Canadian, American, IB, French, and Australian to name the more "prolific" and usually require their teachers to be certified in one of those countries or in IB.

Any other school that will accept less is probably one of the bottom feeders and best avoided.

Can his Guatemalan certification be "transferred" to one of the above - i.e. if he applied for teaching in public schools in Canada - would it be acceptable? That might help you gauge the situation.

I don't know what the rest of your quals are but a recently graduated TESL teacher with no MA or extensive experience or a valid Canadian teaching license is not going to be considered for any of the decent jobs.

Take a look at at least 5 threads on this topic within the last 4-6 weeks below.
