Saw it here (http://www.justlanded.com/english/Saudi-Arabia/Forums/Education/Prince-Sultan-University-in-Riyadh) :

Prince Sultan University in Riyadh

Does anyone have any general knowledge about the Prince Sultan University in Riyadh, or possibly know someone who works (has worked) there? A friend is applying, and I'm wondering what the general reputation is, for teachers and students, alike.

I applied once. They proposed me poorly competitive wages (around 45,000 USD, housing not including). I understand that PHD from Pakistan and India pressure down wages.
Beside this, you live in a ghetto (the embassies area) and students of lower grade are not particularly respectful of professors.

Prince Sultan University
The question was posted in May of 2007, so the response I am prividing may not mean anything to the original questioner. Nevertheless, someone else may benefit from the input I am providing. To make the long story short, I am happy at PSU and the pay is copetitive. To give you an example, one faculty member (certainly not me) is payed more than $10,000 per month. So, the university makes an offer and it is up to you to bargain. The person who answered the original request should have bargained for a better salary and would have gotton a positive response. The appartments the university provides are much better than average appartments in the US where I spent most of my life. I would rate them at the level of three stars hotels. There are six faculty members who have terminal degree from India, one from Malaysia, several from Australia, England, France and the US and canada.

I am sure that no one gets US$10,000 a month for teaching English in KSA. NO ONE.

^ You meant to say no one gets that much for teaching ESL.

But for professors in academic department (say, ENGLISH literature, biology, etc), that level of pay might be possible, but for Saudis only. I think for foreigners, it goes up to SR. 25,000/month at the most.

Well, your question is not valid in the Magic Kingdom!

In the Magic Kingdom there is no such 'Equal Opportunity' rules/culture in universities, or any other sector!

Well, if you advocate the word 'social equality' in the Magic Kingdom, then it will be considered as a breach of your contract, which means you will be given 48 hours to zip-up, pack up and send-up! Laughing

When you work in another country... you are playing in their field with their ball and their rules. In the Gulf, one avoids certain topics... politics and religion being the top of the list. Social equality or inequality is included in both, thus you would be stepping into a mine field.

So, if you feel that you could not adhere to the local system, then yes, you probably shouldn't take a job there. In Saudi, the stakes are higher because getting in and out is more difficult than other Gulf countries.

We play the game by SAUDI RULES in KSA. They take some time to learn. I strated in 1970. Still learning. I still show up at the supermarket just as the "azan" starts.

Maybe he's telling you that you shouldn't be in KSA? One doesn't have this problem in the other Gulf countries. Cool

I was more inclined to think he was telling us to turn from our evil ways. Maybe I'll just speak for myself here. Turn from my evil ways.

Dear 12 Monkeys,
This one's dedicated to you:
"You've got to change your evil ways, baby,
before I stop lovin' you.
You've got to change, baby,
and every word that I say is true.
You got me runnin' and hidin' all over town,
you got me sneakin' and a-peepin' and runnin' you down.
This can't go on, Lord knows you got to change, baby.

When I come home, baby,
my house is dark and my pots are cold.
You're hangin' round, baby,
with Jean and Joan and-a who knows who.
I'm gettin' tried of waitin' and foolin' around,
I'll find somebody who won't make me feel like a clown.

This can't go on, Lord knows you got to change, baby."

Regards,
John
