I am looking at a job in Chichibu (western Saitama, in the mountains, population 70,000)

I`m wondering if there will be a gym there (lifting weights, maybe yoga) and if I can afford it on the not so good pay I`ll be getting (220,000, before deductions, and a car)

thanks in advance for the advice

Chichibu is a pretty rural area so you may have to take a train to somewhere with a gym. Memberships are usually around 10,000 yen per month- more if you want towels and other perks, less if you only go in the evenings or on weekdays for example.

Considering he hasn't told you any details of the job, how can you say that 250,000 is the absolute minimum?

Chichibu is rural, yes, but there are 70,000 people according to wikipedia - is that not big enough to have a gym? can`t take a train to a gym, that`s ridiculous.

Yes, I am aware I`m getting fukked..... I just got screwed in Korea, now I`ll get screwed here - but isn`t that what male foreigners in Asia are really here for anyway?

It's quite normal in Japan to take a train one or two stations or even more to go to a gym or attend classes in something- taking trains here is pretty easy and painless. Wouldn't you drive to a gym back home? Here you just take a train instead. You might just have to adapt as far as things like that go.

I had a Google in Japanese for you, but all I am coming up with is the local city gymnasium which is unlikely to have much in the way of facilities.

"City" is often a misnomer in Japan. Chichibu is about as rural as you can get in this area, and those 70,000 people are spread over a pretty large area, most of which is mountains and farmland. For me a 15 minute train ride to a gym wouldn't be a hardship.

I've seen ads on gaijinpot that offer less than 200,000...

Clearly not or there wouldn't be someone on here telling us they are getting 220,000 yen a month.

Uncle_chop_chop, I am afraid you are wrong on this one- go and have a look at gaijinpot's job page right now and see how many jobs you can see that offer less than 250,000 for full-time work- plenty. Here's one to start you off:

Type: Mid-career
Full/Part Time: Full-time
Salary from: 200,000/Month
Location
Kasukabe, Saitama
English Level
Native-level
Japanese Level
Basic

And mid-career no less.

I think employers legally had to pay 250,000 yen a month for their employees to be eligible for a visa. This has clearly changed now and so have the salaries.

There are a vast number of dispatch companies that pay far less than 250,000, but if you don't believe me then please follow Apsara's advice.

Very Happy

Technically, Interac only pays 230,000 yen in salary. Its just that you get a bonus of 20,000 for attendance. I seen that some of the dispatch pay 230,000 with no mention any bonuses.

Considering there are plenty of jobs for AT LEAST 250,000 (not always good jobs, but they've got to be better than what you've just described!), I think you should stop looking at that job.

On topic: gym memberships are upwards of 10,000yen if you work out like an average person looking for a gym membership would (3-5 days a week, in the evenings). If you only go to the gym in the evenings on weekends, it's usually around 5,000yen/month.

Most gyms, unless you're in a major centre, are not open in the early mornings. Expect any gym in Chichibu to open around 10am.
