Hello,
Ive recently agreed to take a teaching job in the uae. Although the location is not yet set in stone I have been asked to teach in Khalifa city A. I have found information on Abu dhabi but other than the fact that Khalifa is a suburb of abu dhabi I cannot seem to find any up to date information on Khalifa A itself. What i would like to determine is:
How far is it from Abu dhabi itself?
What sort of facilities are available there (shops, pubs, gyms etc.)?
What is the public transport system like e.g. if it is far from abu dhabi is it tough to get there without a car.
I need to make this decision soon so any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance

| There is no public transport system. Others will be able to comment on your other questions, but I doubt if it sports anything remotely resembling a pub. |

| The Golf Club and Al Raha Beach hotel are close by. They have good facilties but can be pricey to join. Few shops though carrefour is about 20 minutes on airport road, a local co-op and LuLu nearby. AD is about 30 minutes on a bad day on route 30. Good place to hop over to Dubai (45 minutes to Jumera) if you hurry! |

Thanks guys,
I don't drive so i'm pretty sure that it wouldnt be a suitable place for me. I'll have to ask to be placed elsewhere.
Thanks again,

One problem is that most of these employers who have more than one location put you where they need you... not where you want to be.

| If you don't drive KCA would be a nightmare in my opinion. And 'pubs'?!! This is the middle east - they don't do pubs! Hotel bars, yes, but nothing resembling a proper pub. |

| lynneireland, being a graduand doesn't mean you have to punish yourself by working in the ICS system. Why do you want to move to the ME? Why the UAE? You have the whole world to choose from. |

Thank VS but in the interview I explained that I dont drive and that I would only take the job if I was guaranteed to be placed somewhere central with a good public transport system and was told that this would not be a problem so as far as I am concerned if they dont honour their word I simply will not be taking the job so I am requesting a change in location but if it is not granted I will be looking elsewhere for a job.
As for Zoot I wanted to work and travel and the UAE seems like it would be a nice change. As for why the ISC, I know a few other people heading out there to work with them this year aswell and it seems like they are well set up for dealing with new teachers. Im not thinking of this as an anywhere near permenant move, Im really just planning on going for the year.
As for pubs, not having any is certainly not a problem for me. Why I even mentioned them I don't know, just that being from Ireland I find that you can tell a lot about an areas facilities based on the number of pubs present |

One of the problems with this part of the world is that often they tell you what you want to hear rather than the truth. Which is why a board like this can be so useful.
Good Luck..

| @ VS: yes, I've learned more from forums like this from any propaganda on "official" websites. Ironically, it's also forums like this that convinced me that it would be a good idea to move to the UAE! |

DONT WORK FOR CHOUEIFAT! DONT. You deserve better for yourself, and their school in Khalifa City A is the only thing in the town. It is DIRT, literally, around it. There are lots of construction sites for new homes but there is nothing at all around it. You'd have nothing to do, especially as you don't have a car.
ISC also does random "maintenance checks" to snoop on you. Check out the SABISstinks website. |
