Hi All...

I have a BA and am going to take a CELTA course in Aug. I would like to teach kids after am done with the course in L.A. (preferably in Ecuador, Brazil, or Colombia). I was wondering how or if its even possible to teach in the local elementary or high schools. Do you need to have a teacher cert to do so? Should I take the YL extension or is it not really needed? Is it worth taking it? Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks Smile

Hi There, and welcome!

Where are you doing your CELTA? Is the YL available there? The YL extension would be useful in terms of learning about teaching English to little people, but for the job market in Ecuador, it wouldn't be a deal breaker not to do it.

A lot of high schools and elementaries hire native speaking teachers with less-

If you have any other qualifications, you could be in line for some of the high end elementary schools, which pay extremely well...

Saludos,

Justin

Hi and Thanks for the welcome.

Am taking the course in Ecuador and they don't offer YL. I believe its not even offered in S.A.

The only other experience I have is volunteering in Urkusiki, a mountain region surrounding Otavalo, Ecuador. I taught 5th grade for two months teaching math, science, and spanish grammar (I speak fluently spanish).

INtl schools, yes you need a cert. Bilingual schools no. Here's what you do. COme, get a legal visa if possible. Then start going to the GOOD bilingual shcools in person. You might even try the intl schools, sometimes they hire teaching assts (and they don't need certs)
