I am presently teaching in Thailand. The lifestyle is simple, pleasant, but one is always skrimping and saving to survive as salaries are so poor. the lack of financial security has become very difficult.
I have seen an advert for teaching at the Kuwait Petroleum company via language solutions for 900KD a month plus free accommodation. First question: is this a reasonable package/salary?? I have read the thread below about KPC, but can someone tell me (second question) what are the employees like to teach in terms of behaviour and classroom management (teacher stress etc)? Finally, would you advise teaching for an oil comapny like KPC or a public school - as I understand that private school students can be a nightmare?? Constructive advice appreciated. Thanks. |

where do i begin - your post shows you to be a newby...
first, life's hard all over.
second, an ad for jobs in kuwait for commercial contracts does not mean jobs are immediately available - companies troll for resumes as a part of putting there proposals and bids together.
third, 900 for contract work is a 'teaser rate' if you get it and keep it after 1 year consider yourself lucky - possible but lucky
forth, is it a 'reasonable salary'? depending on your qualifications and experience.
fifth, KPC students are priviledged employees (almost entirely support personnel - the engineers are the only ones who 'work' and they don't need english anyway) of the parents of the spoiled children who give the private school a bad rap. most have gone to Kuwait University in my expereince teaching them so they don't really need english and most really don't want to learn.
sixth, you're confused - no expats (save a few brave indians and arabs) teach in kuwait public schools -- some private schools are hell holes the rest are jobs
contructive enough for you? |

Thanks. Your reply is helpful. So as a 'newbie' in Kuwait, it seems you are saying I should consider the package to be reasonably good. (Asside from being new in Kuwait, I have a BA and CELTA plus ten years of teaching: on a business diploma marketing and business PLUS english teaching in both schools -private and public -and universities.) Yes, I must have been confused about private and public schools. So do you think that teaching for an oil company like KPC would be a better idea (assuming i got a place) than teaching in a private school, for a newbie. I am thinking in terms of classroom management/motivation/teacher stress. I know that both situations can be tough in both, but which would you choose or advise?? |

Jessy,
We have something in common, in that I, too, taught in Thailand for many years before moving on to Japan, and now, Kuwait.
When I first came to Kuwait 6 years ago, I taught at KPC, with IPETQ. The money was good and the working hours weren't a problem. But the vacation time was the big issue for me. When contract time came around after the first year, I opted to take a teaching position at an international school, and I haven't regretted my decision for one second. Decent pay, and fantastic vacation time. June 18th, I'm heading back to our home in Thailand for 2 1/2 glorious months of R & R in LOS.
With your credentials, and years of teaching, you'd have no problem getting a job. PM me when you have time. The school I teach at would be interested in speaking with you.
Cheers |

Rommel, Thanks for your message. It's much appreciated. I have just tried to send a pm, but the system says that people cannot do this until they have posted 50 posts, and I haven't reached this number yet. Is there a possibility that you could email me? I have adjusted my profile, so hopefully it will be possible to view my email address.
I am very intersted in what you say. |

KOC can be a tough place to work. Long hours, lazy students, careless management. The salary is adequate but you have to put up with a lot.
On the other hand, most of the schools underpay their staff and some teachers have to share accomodation. With KOC you get your own apartment.
Good luck. |
