|
|
I arrive in Istanbul within 7 days or so.
Any schools looking for teachers?
I have TEFL diploma, taught in Turkey between 1984-89 - but no degree.
Have been in the adult education field within the transport industry for the past few years.
Even a dershane or similar would be nice, just to get my feet back under the table as it were.
Any leads?
Thanks. |

I'm not too sure without a degree, but if you did it before, why not again?
If you have experience and a CELTA, it may be enough.......
These two language schools are regularly advertising for teachers, but up to 30 hours a week :
Oxford House College @ oxfordhousegroup.com
or phone Liz Aykanat : 0216 550 7510
(Istanbul)
English Time (Esentepe/Sisli) <[email protected]
TeL :0212 2732868
Good luck! |

I've been in contact with English Time about a post in Istanbul. Does the school have a good reputation? The job description they sent me seems like a fairly heavy load. Thx. |

ET: their books are crap; they have resorted to hiring people with online Diplomas; teachers are so fed up with the books, some just pass the students for the hell of it, of f^%^ off during an exam and let them cheat.
Having said that, they seem to have a lot of students, which means a lot of hours for you.

I assume by your sarcasm, that you think 30-35 hours is a bit of a tall tale. Or perhaps you think nobody wants to work these hours?
If it's the former, many teachers are working these hours. Well at least the ones I know. Some do it by working double shifts on weekends....OUCH!

15 TYR = ~$12.80 USD. And here's a few other tidbits...
- No vacation throughout the 10-month contract...only X-mas to New Year's.
- Teachers share classes.
- need to give two-days' notice if you want to use the photocopier.
ET's 26-page teacher handbook looks ok, but it seems like they work their teachers to death. The contact hours are conspicuously absent from it, too. |

I would like to know which branches you are talking about. My mates work for ET at the Taksim, Kadikoy and Mecidikoy branches.
I am unaware of anybody giving two days notice to use a photocopier.
Yes, teachers share five day classe at a ratio of 3 to 2.
Many of them if they give decent notice can take a vacation in the summer,if they wish. ALL of my friends did so last year. ALL OF THEM got time off for Christmas, with most of them taking as much as a week off. Some were lucky because Kurban Bayram fell just before Xmas, so they got two weeks off.
Also, no one I know gets as little as 15 ytl/hour because their experience and qualifications warrants more. If you are inexperienced, I am guessing you will be offered around 14-15 ytl/hr.

I have been working for ET in Sirinevler for the last ten months and no way does anyone give 2 days notice for the photocopier. That is some guff that head office came up with, which no one listens to anyways.
The books are, well, challenging, and the hours are intense. Plus if you join now its almost guaranteed they will send you to Bakırky from what i hear.
New teachers are getting anywhere between 15 and 17 YTL per hour, but they will get you residency and teacherdude is right about the time off thing.
My advice to you my nargile friend is to try everywhere but ET for now. Use them as a last resort. Their need for teachers is so eye-wateringly bad that you would have no problems joining them. |

A good rule of thumb might be to avoid any schools with initials for names, especially where 'E' is the first letter. |

They want to hire me, but I am not sure if I can do it.
Try Neslihan Baykara, Human Resources at Berlitz Language School in Istanbul--they are looking for TEFL certified teachers. She is very nice.
Her email is [email protected]

What happened to the pay raise? Last time I worked for ET, about a year ago (did some part time work there), they had just raised the rates to a minimum of like 20 TL/hr. I was making a heck of a lot more than that. Was that just a ploy to pull teachers in? Did they drop the pay again immediately after that? |

Ah, yeah, didn't notice the dates. Pay should be much better now... Not sure about conditions... |
