Why is it that certain "folks" feel the need to demean others on this forum? How does smug pomposity and condescension play a part in the abnormal behavior of neurotic and jaded persons?
Better yet, how much longer will these individuals be permitted to participate in this forum?
And why is it, that people cannot post reasonable questions here without the above-mentioned miscreants trying to boost their self-esteems through demeaning others?
Any ideas, Kipling or VS? |

Ah scot - you're just envious because you weren't singled out for mention. |

eclectic, I think this question has been asked a few times before in various ways - why don't you do a search?
Just teasing - I always feel sorry for newcomers who are berated for not having done a search before asking. Perhaps Dave's should have a "read-this-before-your-first-post page". Gotta love those hyphens... Anyway, such a page may make things (seem) a bit, uhm, less abrasive.
I think it's important not to be too sensitive around here. Lots of tongue-in-cheek things get said. Also, if you don't like it but need info, try to sift through the banter for the info you need (as Mr Mead so skillfully did in the thread that this one is based on) and ignore the remarks you feel are unpleasant/directly aimed at you.
In Kipling's defense, I thought he was really just having fun (with you) - as you clearly were, too. Or did I misinterpret it?
And VS? Oh well, she's clearly here to stay. And why shouldn't she? She replies to most posts and most of the time has at least something to offer.
By the way VS, I used to really like your previous avatar, the magic lamp. Why did you change it?
And here endeth the sermon.

On rereading your post, I wondered how "smug pomposity and condescension", "the abnormal behaviour of neurotic and jaded persons" and "miscreants" wouldn't also be regarded as "demeaning". |

Well, in fact, Mama Lock (i.e. VS) did not change the magic lamp. Her magic lamp was stolen by Ali Baba in Muscat some years ago, and sent to be sold in the Magic Lamps auctions in the Magic Kingdom! |

Twice now the hosting site of my avatar has disappeared. I too loved my lamp. 007 tried to find it again for me, as did others... but in vain. A friend lent me her kitty...
Now back to the previously recorded program...

I playfully wrote "I and my wife", then quite deliberately added parentheses, just in case someone may have missed the joke, and was quite disappointed to find that certain people had the need, it seemed, to say it appeared "uneducated", and etc....
Quite unnecessary, as well as mean.
I was merely asking about multiple exit visas, and I got this. I think it wasn't unreasonable of me to see that as uncalled-for and demeaning.
As for needing thick skin to participate in a forum, well, I guess its a bit more than a forum for some of you, like maybe a place to vent all your frustrations in mildly insulting ways onto newcomers. Too bad others don't need to do that whilst researching things in an objective manner. Where is your sense of civility and respect? Ahh, how easy to be mischievous while hiding behind a computer like a coward! In the street it would be quite the different story, wouldn't it.
As for the question I was asked---something like isn't my post about jaded or neurotic persons ALSO demeaning and insulting---the answer is NO. My post merely described the behavior quite objectively of certain posters.
I truly suspect that when certain people stay too long in a place they are quite bitter about, they become hostile to others, and then say it is merely "good fun", and that others need "thick skin" in order to understand the tone, etc...
How sad, really. Why don't they change their environment, why don't they try Tahiti or Borneo, or even Brighton in the South (heee-heee!!), rather than just rot and putrify and try to drag down the good humor of others with their jaded and pedantic tones?
If anything, this has shown me that there is precious little for them to do in KSA, except live and breathe on a forum venting their frustration in a rather UNveiled manner.
Wow, whatever it takes to float your boat!!! |

Dear Mr E
I unreservedly apologise for any offence I have caused you, it was not my intention to demean anyone ( I don't know demeaning of the word). It is difficult to convey shades of meaning in good natured banter which is why the emoticons are overused in my posts
A glance too at my previous posts will show that I too have had to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune in my initial quest for enlightenment.
I think I speak for many in saying that few have been spared the matronly cuff around the ears that VS likes to administer and one must always pause,..... when she sharpens her clause.
On sound advice freely given on this board ( No Names, No pack drill ) I am here in Far Distant Himavant sitting in a darkened room, on a chair, thinking and thinking and waiting for my Saudi Visa. My only companion, again on sound advice freely given on this board,
are the complete works of Virginia Woolf ordered at great expense from Amazon. (Sorry JS but is it any wonder she topped herself, she should have stuck to tennis) the old fingerwagger is getting worried about my health and suggesting traditional Asian remedies ( Mastercard, American Express and Visa...the latter not to be confused with the Saudi version)
So, you can see, that I too have been through the mill, I've seen it, done it and have got the Avatar (still working on that......kids are useless)
I will pm you a full unabridged mea culpa today. :
Mr K

The apostrophes and parentheses above have been fully tested by an Independent Grammarian and are safe to use. |

OK! Thank you sir. Apology accepted, though it is not needed, as I see I misinterpreted your tone, and I APOLOGIZE FOR THAT TO YOU, AND TO ALL WHO I MISINTERPRETED. (YES, THESE CAPS ARE SCREAMING NOW!!! )
Peace, cheers, and all that good stuff.
As for Asian cures, I will pm you with some, as I partake quite regularly in them over here in the really far, Far East! |

actually I've bee treated quite well with my newbie questions on here
Just as many posters on the Korean boards are ott cynical about working in Korea, I imagine some of the stuff here is ott too.
Not that I'm underestimating how different life in Saudi is to what we're all used to. I'm sure it's a very deeply conservative, puritanical culture just like they say it is. But I'm sure that if, as newbies we're adaptable, tolerant people who work hard but don't get wound up by pettiness we'll all be just fine in the KSA! |
