Looks like there are quite a number of beginner jobs in Indonesia, mostly EF it seems. But the forums for Indonesia don't seem to get a relative amount of traffic.
Anybody have any thoughts on this? Or is this just some pointless observation that I had? |

I guess if you compare it to the extremely popular Asian locations like China, Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan, no, there aren't many posts. But when you compare it to all the countries in the Forums it seems to get its fair share. |

Indonesia isn't a popular choice among TEFLers or K12 school teachers so companies have to advertise quite heavily to fill jobs. Also, one of the reasons for the huge amount of traffic on the China and Korea boards is that there isn't a whole lot to do in those countries so people have more time on their hands to surf the net. Most of us in Indo flick through this forum during the day at work but are too occupied to do so after school... |

What could be the reason that Indonesia isn't that popular choice for TEFLers, compared for instance to China ? Is the pay that much better in China ? |

If you're looking for lots of conversations about lots of stuff, you might want to look at other forums that are more geared towards general discussion, like those at www.expat.or.id or one of the others (I've forgotten them, but you can search for "expatriate indonesia forum")...
Oddly, when I looked for job postings (teaching) recently, I didn't see much...

Generally, no.
Indonesia still gets a bad rep because of terrorist attacks like the Bali bombs, even though such a thing hasn't happened here for a long time. Having tried China myself I'd say Indo wins hands down as a place to live. |

I worked in Guangdong for one academic year. Never spent so much time in my life watching DVDs and surfing the net at home. |

That's what turns me off. I used to drink at those bars. I was really devastated after the attacks and don't know if I'd want to go back. Indonesia is a great country with a lot to do, but it has some very serious and dangerous political undercurrents. |

Terrorists schmerrorists... Sorry for the bad language. I pity those who scared to go to Indonesia because of this. I feel more threatened every day I'm in the States than the entire time I was in Indonesia. And that includes driving on the roads, too. The western world (especially my "blessed" usa) is way more consistently and randomly violent. |

Hee hee! That has been my experience too. However, market dynamics mean that so long as people are discouraged from coming here to work, it is so much easier for those of us who enjoy living here to land the better jobs.
Indonesia is not for everyone and there are some very real stresses and strains in daily life in a developing country like this one. I wouldn't like to mislead anyone into thinking that life here is all rosy. One very important factor (much more important than the perceived threat of terrorism) is the lack of legal certainty. This means that if an employer screws you around there is little or no chance for any legal redress. It is very important to choose your employer carefully.
In many ways it took my experimental stint in the Middle Kingdom to bring home to me the aspects of life in Indo that I really like. I like having unrestricted access to international media, satellite TV, a language that is written in a familiar alphabet, plenty of holidays spread around the year, spicy food, English films at any number of clean cinemas, and people who, for the most part, think it is impolite to retch and spit everywhere. Each to his/her own. |

Malu, that's an interesting list of what you like about Indonesia. But I notice that you can get all of that back home too. Is there any thing a bit more "Indonesian" that you like about the place? |

I, too, feel safer than I did back home. I don't have to worry about drunk drivers (except for the Koreans, Euros and Yanks), I don't have to pay tons of taxes, I don't feel that my life is in danger. Back home, I'd often hear gunfire, I was threatened, my apartment building vandalized to the point that I had to board up the lobby windows just to keep hoodlums out, and once saw the street in front of the bus stop I sometimes used taped off because of a pool of blood from a gang shooting. And I wasn't even living in a BAD area!
My biggest gripes about this country are the lack (in most places) of adequate medical care, the corruption, the pollution and the fact that any employer can screw me with very little chance that I can ever do anything about it. If I'm in Jakarta, the traffic jams make a short ride into a multi-hour ordeal that becomes costly.
Otherwise, I'm pretty happy here - really!

The weather, opportunities for travel, ability to grow my favourite orchids and garden plants without a glasshouse. That kinda thang. |
