Hi all,

I am looking into making the move to the UAE. I have a MEd in TESOL and a Japanese fiance. My question is not so much about myself getting a job, but more about my fiance's chances of getting a job.

Are there any jobs available for Japanese speakers in the UAE?

the real question should be

what are her qualifications?

I know several japanese wives here in RAK all of whom work if they want to. Some do translation work, some teach... It really depends on her qualifications.

I would suggest to simplify your life, your fiance be your spouse by the time you arrive...

Co-habitation is illegal in the Middle East. (sometimes done, but still illegal... and can particularly cause problems if the couple are not both Westerners of the same race)

Adorabilly's answer should satisfy the OP's basic question. Yes, Japanese women can work in the UAE if they have a needed skill. But yes, as VS states, certainly you must marry her first if you want to live with her in the Middle East...

Other than that, I am puzzled as to why someone would ask such a question without telling us what her background and qualifications are. OK, here's a partial list of career opportunities:

Nobel Laureate in Physics -- teach Certificate & Diploma for HCT
Exotic dancer -- work in a club that has poles on the stage
"Office Lady" -- work in an office; pour tea for men.
High-powered CEO in the private sector -- work as a secretary and get paid $20,000 per annum and pour tea for men
Kabuki dancer -- work in a club that has poles on the stage

Is this helpful?

I think that our OP was asking if there were jobs that required a speaker of Japanese, but it would have been helpful to know her qualifications. (I don't think one needs to speak Japanese to be a pole dancer. Laughing)

Dear veiledsentiments,

"(I don't think one needs to speak Japanese to be a pole dancer. )"

Very true - for that, one needs to speak Polish.

Regards,
John

Now what with all those goofy replies poor OP has probably decided it's better to stay where s/he is. Polish! Rolling Eyes

If he has decent reading skills, I assume that he also has the answer. (and a little knowledge of the kind of people he would be teaching with)

Arabianknight. Nothing in the op's original quesiton gives the sex of either of them. I did make an assumption that it was a Male OP asking about bring a female fiance to the UAE, but that is based on my experience that most of the spouses who are japanese (that I know) of ESL teachers are for the most part women.

I did make an assumption there (though I do think it maybe valid). If I am wrong about the sex, then it should say

what are their qualifications?

The demand for native japanese speakers (of either) sex is quite low. There are some multinationals in dubai/ad who may want a native japanese speaker (and if they speak arabic that would be a HUGE plus), but for the most part there isn't that great of a demand for native japanese speakers in the job market.

so again, I know several who are teaching (not japanese), I know one who does translation work for a company in japan, I know one who teaches piano and japanese part time.

Very true that fiance denotes woman. We, myself included, may have assumed too much, such as the extremely common phenomenon around here that many people don't bother to spell correctly. ssphinx may be the woman. But I wonder how many Japanese men would want to be the secondary earners in a place like this.

Ok, if that be the case, my revised list will be as follows

Salaryman: -- He'd have to be sent here on contract for that. Sit at desk, kiss butt all day, then drink all night with boss

Sushi chef -- invite me if you're any good

Japanese teacher -- we've gone over that. Missed your chance for world domination...now Chinese is the world's next third language. I say "third" because Engrish will not be toppled any time soon!

In American English you will find that the first is now commonly used for both. So... one can't assume either way... since you also don't know the nationality of the OP.
