"I'd give my eyes to see Monte (Carlo)."

Wasn't that a line from the boorish employer in the early pages of Rebecca?

Anyway, the first illustration of the phrase that sprang to my - possibly rather weird- Shocked mind

To prevent the success of something e.g. Internal conflict defeats the purpose of teamwork.

Spending two or three decades saving money in the KSA so that you can live a good life later defeats the purpose...obviously, you've just spent two or three decades in prison.

Well, a prison is a prison, regardless if you have spend a decade or a year! Obviously, Sheikh Nano defeated the purpose when he spent a couple of years eating Kabsa and drinking hot camel milk in the big prison, the Magic Kingdom!!

Some time ago, Sheikh Nano wrote:

if its that bad, PLUS it defeats the purpose, wouldn't only a glutton for punishment renew a contract?

MX had the best definition of the OP's term.
