Does anyone know if there is a SAFEA or Education Ministry policy for the maximum classes/classroom hours that an FT can be allowed to teach each week? If you do, please post a link to the source. If it might be Province specific, I am in Sichuan Province (Chengdu)

I'm not sure, but I believe that the maximum number of hours per week an FT can be made to teach is 168. However, all hours over 161 per week should be paid at a minimum rate of 20 rmb/hr. This is to ensure that the FT has a healthy lifestyle and that bosses don't get too greedy. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Sad

PS Check your contract.

This one is self-administering. If you believe the hours on your contract is unreasonable, politely advise them where they can shove it. Idea

You got it backwards...I have 13 classes now. I want 28. My entire adult life I have worked a minimum workweek of 80 hours. Most of that time, a lot more than that. Only working a few hours a week is toooooo boring!

28 classes is only 18.6 total hours of class time per week. Add another 4 hours for lesson prep.

Its all repetition. Only two lesson plans...No homework. No exams...strictly oral English.

what's the problem? you want to work more but the school wont give it to you? if your school has a full complement of FTs then there may not be any more work available.

but if there is and they won't give it to you for whatever reason, then why not fill all those empty hours with part time work outside? it's easy enough to find and it's what a lot of people are doing.

I'm in the same boat as you, trying to teach more hours next semester (with the additional pay too of course) at my university. I've been discussing this with my FAO the past couple of weeks and the representative hasn't mentioned any regulation about a maximum number of hours per week allowed. I told her I'd be willing to teach 26-28 hours a week and she voiced some concern that I might be too tired and have a sore throat from speaking too much. So maybe our FAO's are only looking out for our health. Smile

Ask to get a second job at another school. If they don't want to pay you for more classes, then maybe another school will. That's what I did in Japan.
