Nanyang Institute of Technology:
After being told, "You're hired," and after spending money to travel here, I was told, "Maybe you're not hired." After being told, "You can teach your specialty," I was told, "You can't teach your specialty." They expressed last minute reservations based on a comment by one former student. I had this student over 3 years ago in a course they didn't even ask me to teach here. They then asked me to give a demonstration lesson and assured me this was for feedback purposes and not part of the hiring process. If I went along with this, I'm sure there would have been more surprises. When they told me, "Foreign teachers at our school teach their specialty, " I said, "Oh no, most foreign teachers in China teach primarily speaking." They insisted and offered the name of a foreign teacher who taught strictly his specialty. Ironically, I spent a lot of time helping this school with recruiting, and even advertised for them at my own expense.
Meanwhile, across town at the normal school, where I spent even more time recruiting, the FAO has other foreign teachers recruiting for her and might advertise using any of the formulas below. As with so many other schools in China, the students, Chinese English teachers, and foreign teachers are great, but beware of the administration.

| For the record, I'm not interested in being evaluated or critiqued by people who have granted diplomas to hundreds and even thousands of students who cannot speak or write a complete, correct sentence in the language they studied for 3 or 4 years. Considering the disastrous results, I'm inclined to go in the opposite direction of anything they say and do. |

BTW: The accommodations at the technical college are much better than the accommodations at the normal school. New, large, well equipped. The campus is cleaner and quieter and the air is fresher. The building manager speaks English and lives downstairs. |

| Turns out a Chinese English teacher makes the decisions about courses, textbooks, and schedules. The dean only decides whether to offer a contract. I finally said to the FAO, "Why don't you arrange a meeting with me, you, the dean, and whoever is in charge of the specifics. With everyone in the same room at the same time, everyone gets all their questions answered and everyone gets the same information. No more ping pong negotiation. No more confusion and miscommunication." |

They haven't asked me to assess their students, they haven't asked me to exchange ideas with their teachers, they haven't asked me about American education, they haven't asked about my experiences in other countries, they haven't even asked me to attend English Corner. Very strange.
The computer is not in English, the Internet is very slow (45 seconds between click and window), the microwave doesn't work, the TV doesn't get CCTV 9. How well the building manager responds to these type of problems, I'll never know because I'm out of here.
The night before I left, one of my Chinese friends called me and said, "They said they did this, they said you did that, they said they told you this, they said you told them that." So I sat on the phone with her saying over and over, "That's not true!" and "That didn't happen!"
Consider this school only if you want to experience the same guantlet of confusion, controdiction, and controversy, not to mention wasted time and wasted money. At best, they need to learn to communicate. |

| So far every one of his posts has only whined and bitched about the college. A little over the top if you ask me. It would be good to know what the staff at the college have to say about him. |

I am working at this school and have met the other teachers . One teacher was let go because he was constantly drunk and looked near death . He actually walked around with defication on his clothes.
He probably couldn't work in other schools because his degree was from a college . One time he was preparing for a class about Canada and needed to know the names of the provinces. I don't think this is the person in this post. The person who posted here is much more lucid than the person I am talking about . I have been at several places in China and so far this school has treated me the best . |

I'm a little confused. Does Nanyang Institute of Technology go by 3 different names including Nanyang Teacher's University and Nanyang Normal University? Or are these different departments within the same University? Or different campuses of the same university?
I am very interested in learning more about this University, especially from current teachers or teachers who have recently taught there. Also, can you please tell me more about the location. I am very familiar with Zhengzhou and a few other parts of Henan, but not the Nanyang area.
Thank you in advance for you feedback |

And to answer your questions:
Does Nanyang Institute of Technology go by 3 different names including Nanyang Teacher's University and Nanyang Normal University?
No, Nanyang Normal University and Nanyang Teaching University are not the same as NIT. Nanyang Normal/Teaching University (the same university) is on the Western edge of Nanyang.
Also, can you please tell me more about the location.
Nanyang is a smallish city. It has all the necessities such as supermarkets, but not much in the way of western foods. There are about 17 foreigners in town (across all the universities), of whom 12 teach English. It is a reasonable city to get around, but there are no bars or the like. |

How long have you been in Nanyang for, Thursdaysky?
And is NIT a large school? I saw some photos of it and it looked nice.
But i'ts hard to find much general info on Nanyang itself. So you're saying that a city of 10 million (according to Wikipedia, at least) has no bars or nightlife? |
