Is it still possible to get a job teaching in a summer program in HK? No, I can't go with the British Council because they don't like my TEFL certification It doesn't have to be lucrative. I am hoping it would at least pay for my accommodations while there. My objective is to be able to visit significant schools in HK so that I will have a better chance at finding a job for 2010/11 I will be heading off to Korea at the end of August to teach there for 2009/10 ohhhhh....btw....yes, there is a special female in HK |

Sure, but it won't be lucrative. If you're sure that's all you want there are plenty of low-paying schools that'll take you on short or long term. There's probably something on tefl.com. But they also often demand long hours - you and your lady might not be so happy about that! |

OP, do you have PR status in HK? If not then you would require a work visa and I doubt very much whether you would be able to attract a sponsor for such a short period of time, and, even if you did manage to do so, then it might take all summer to arrange the said visa. I know of people who have resigned with the same employer and there had been no changes to their personal circumstances and it still took some six or seven weeks to get their next visa through.
If you choose to work for someone without a visa viz., if you choose to work illegally then you should expect some rough treatment, and of course you would have no protection from labour laws. But then why stop there? If you are going to work illegally then why stop at ESL? Why not go the whole hog and go in for some bank robbery, extortion, or kidnapping? I think such activities would be much more lucrative. |

Agreed. My feeling is that cowboy schools will take you and pay cash in hand, whatever visa you've got. But I know a couple of folk who got caught (not in TEFL), chucked out, and can't return.

Watch out for them triads though. They don't much like competition. |
