Where is Uncle Sam, the dear friend of Sheikh?
"It is shocking to discover that the United States government works hand in gloves with a government which leadership includes royals with such sadistic traits. And to think that U.S. government operatives tried to cover-up such a heinous crime by closing their eyes to it is despicable. It is hypocrisy at its peak for the U.S. to continue haranguing governments, especially third world governments on human rights and good governance when it is party to such human rights abuses."

Can't say I'm surprised. When I first landed in UAE there used to be daily reports on the police to the effect of " ... a (insert nationality here) man was arrested Monday for a string of break and enters in (insert location here) after the man confessed, he was taken to hospital.
It was "interesting" in a morbid sort of way to see how many of these criminals confessed as soon as they were picked up by police. |

It's also interesting that, although this news story was sent to (and made it to us via) the company my partner works for, no "reassuring message from the chairman" has made it our way. Furthermore, all postings referring to the article on the Abu Dhabi Woman Forum have been deleted due to their controversial nature. Now I ask you, if this isn't pertinent information for people considering a move, what is? |

This is a truly disgusting story, but I doubt that it surprised many of the ME long-timers. The royal families are certainly large enough to have a few sadistic nutcases and everyone knows that they are above the law. Murders within the family have always been settled within the family. One hears the rumors... bodies in the desert... but usually females in honor killings.
This video getting out into the public eye is shocking in itself. I just wonder how Sheikh Zayed would have handled it. The current ruler had a bad reputation before he took over and one wonders if he will have the cojones to punish his brother for besmirching the family honor in this way.
But, is it pertinent to people taking a job? It wouldn't have had an effect on my decision. Every country has disgusting and disgraceful people who may or may not get away with crap like this... Abu Ghraib comes to mind... along with the group that enabled it.

^ Punish? Didn't you read the full article?
It said the case had been amicably settled or something. Both parties have refused to pursue charges (robbery against the victim, and assault against the prince).
This is justice for you. Sick sick sick.
It is only in the Middle East, some African, and some South American countries where you can torture someone with whips, electric cattle prods, and then drive over them with impunity. |

Thanks for the reassurance, VS. As someone who will soon move to the UAE for the first time with my young wife this video has sent a chill through my spine! |

Come on Trap... you know that any true punishment from the family is not likely to be known to the public. If there is one thing that is a given in this part of the world, it is that they are loathe to wash their dirty laundry in public. I suspect that this is not the first problem caused by this young Sheikh, but I would hope that his wings will be clipped even if it is just because this video has gone worldwide now... pity his wives and children...
I suspect that the victim in this case was bought off, as is also the norm in a culture that accepts blood money in place of criminal punishment for many crimes, including murder. Pay his medical bills, give him a satchel of cash, and put him on a plane back home.
The only good news is that expat teachers are highly unlikely to ever encounter this type of person. That said... if you are driving on the highway and a big fancy 4WD flashes his lights for you to get out of the way - don't challenge... get out of the way.

Sickening. This guy belongs in psycho ward; oubliette would be too good for his likes. Does this happen more often than we think? What goes on in the UAE prisons?
Noticed someone in the media trying to spin this as a "private security guard" incident not involving any official gov't employees. Sorry, but I don't buy it. I've seen UAE police up close (pulled over for a wrong turn once) and that looks like their police uniform to me, not to mention the police truck which is also visible in the video.

As I suggested: home detention - punishment within the family. Most people unfamiliar with this part of the world don't realize that their even admitting this is quite surprising.

There are other stories but these have been hushed up. Too much wealth, not enough to do and time to indulge in sadism. What happened to Sheikh Zayed's vision? He would turn over in his grave. |

Ah yes, wealth and lack of leisure opportunities.
A sure fire recipe for subhuman torture techniques! |
