|

Hi there
I am new to the site and would like to find out some information on racial discrimination in Taiwan. There have been quite a few varying comments on this topic, but I was particularly interested in Hess. I looked at their website and although I am South African, I found it interesting that there was no indication of non-white South Africans ( or from other countries). Do schools really choose appearance over experience?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance |

Greetings,
Your info is correct. And South Africa is way down on the list. Blonde-haired blue-eyed (nuetral accent) Canadians are at the top of the food chain.
Sorry, and plz know I am just the messanger. |

Thanks for that. I would rather know what I am getting myself into before applying.
I find that whole way of thinking quite funny considering this should be a potential tool to teach kids diversity and to expose them to different cultures. Looking at Japan too. |

a234,
I know a lot of "non-white" teachers here. I should have written "all things being equal". I think I could have worded my post better, as I encourage you to go for it.
SO PLZ APPLY..WHY NOT? |

My husband and I are a mixed race couple, he is from the UK. We have always wanted to teach in Asia, so the fact that there is more racial discrimination in more parts than others does not deter me at all. We are still going to apply and hopefully be in Asia late October early November. You only live once and I know that I have a lot to offer. Not deterred at all, rest easy.
Thanks again for your feedback. |

Great attitude!!! Show me a country that DOESNT have racism.
Just be aware that it exists more blatantly in Asia than you are probably used to. I used to work for a school in Indonesia that would throw away ALL teacher application forms that were from non-Chinese Indonesians. That has changed in the recent few years though, so at least they are moving in the right direction... |

I'm tempted to say North Korea, as 99.999% of the population is Korean and thus racism would be a non-issue.
I suppose it comes down to different levels of racism. Some are more overt, such as the above example in Indeonesia.
Schools here do ask for photos and many will reject teachers based on skin colour, yes. I worked in a school that had about 8 resumes and the 3 non-white applications were rejected for only that reason.
Good luck. |
