Sorry to flood the board with messages as soon as I registered, but I guess I'm just chock full of questions at the moment. As I mentioned in my previous post, a friend and I are both hoping to go to Japan to teach English. We are planning to apply to Aeon, and had a couple of questions about their online application.

First off, I was wondering whether I needed a cover letter to go along with the 500 word essay they require for the application. If I do require a cover letter, what parts of my experience should I focus on in this portion of application. Also, in the 500 word essay, is there anything in particular that they are known to be looking for? I don't plan on submitting a cookie cutter application, but if there are any general tips regarding this portion of the application, any help would be appreciated.

Further, what kind of general timeline can I expect from the time I submit the application online to the time that (if I am accepted) I will receive an invitation to the group interview? We would love to plan our schedules out ahead of time if we are lucky enough to receive an interview, and it would be nice having a general time frame to work with.

Thanks to everyone in advance for all your help!

No, you do not need a cover letter. the questions and the essay cover everything that they need.

Your essay is not just for the application process. If you are successful in the application then it may also be shown to your new school manager and head teacher. Use it as an introduction to yourself. Mention parts of Japanese culture that interest you and why you want to teach. Talk about any past travel experience you have and how you enjoyed the experience of other cultures. Try and make it interesting, they read hundreds of these, find a way to make it stand out a bit.

As for the timeline, I'm afraid I can't help. In the UK there are 2 interview times a year when the New York office come over (This year it was February and June) I don't know what the timelines are like for anywhere else.

I think it was around a week before I got the invitation to the interview meeting. It is on July 16 in Los Angeles. They offered an alternate date of July 22. I don't know where you are, but if this is the interview location for you, I can tell you that the deadline for cancelling for the candidate is July 13, so even if they fill up, there is a chance there will be last minute openings. If this is the one you are targeting, get the app. in ASAP. I am hoping I will be able to pull out before then due to getting a better offer. There's one definite maybe I should hear about within a week, but of course you have to keep firing your flares until they actually lift you off the mountain. Dunno where that metaphor came from, but you get my drift. Good luck, and try not to mention wanting to see the places we nuked them. Wink

Yeesh, that's rubbish of them. You'd expect a "thank you but no thanks" email at least wouldn't you? I wonder if that's AEON Tokyo specific.

Yeah, I agree it is rubbish of them. Maybe they feel if they offer me a specific reason for not being employed by them that I will turn around and sue them (I am one of those older types who has plenty of eikaiwa "experience" and Japanese-language knowledge)
