OK, so I know that the IELTS examiner training sessions are fully booked and nobody will say when the next one is....
But if anyone knows of a training session with a space on it for one person, I'd be mucho grateful. |

Why/how is this a scam? Aren't the examiner training sessions held and organised by the various IELTS examining centres in the UAE independently and individually? |

Yeah, but amazingly they never advertise the need for any new examiners, and they never respond to phone calls, and when you get to talk to someone they always say
" We ran our training sessions last month and we don't know when the next one is..." |

Why?
Are you Mr. IELTS?
Or have I become - without noticing it- your slave, and now I have to obey your imperious commands? |

Before we jump on Mr Seven Seas (assuming it is Mr.)... if this post is accurate, I see his point although scam may be the wrong word here.
It appears that he is trying to get approved as an IELTS examiner, but
1. no place advertises
2. the places supposedly offering them won't return phone calls
3. when you do finally reach someone, they can't or won't tell you when the next course will be.
That sounds very frustrating.
So... those of you in the UAE. How does one get into an IELTS course? Or is it one of those things that only employers can organize a course so that their teachers get approved and free-lancers can't get it? Perhaps if he understood the situation, it wouldn't look like a scam to him.
When I was there, HCT arranged for us to get the course done at our college.

Twenty thousand points to VS for figuring out that I'm a man.
Why did I use the word scam?
When a system is run by and for the benefit of a small group of people, and that group of people restricts information and entry to the group, it kinda gets my goat.
If anyone manages to get the info I am looking for, I'll eat my hat. And just so you know, it's one of those silly Australian hats. |

Who have you tried to contact. As far as I know, the British Council have a training program though it is normally fully booked very quickly. Are there others? |

IDP/IELTS Australia also have offices in the UAE. They co-own IELTS together with Cambridge ESOL and the British Council; however, they are also in competition with the British Council for business. This means, you can examine for them as well.
Last I heard, the BC trains for free but but not IDP/IA.
Whether all of this applies in the UAE I don't know, but it's pretty much the deal where both organisations operate in the same country.
Good luck! |

I am not sure it is a scam. They can be quite secretive though. Rather like the "Cheka". |

Mr. 7Cs,
Although this training program was offered last September, you might check to see if UOWD will offer another one some time soon.
Quote: |
UOWD is expanding as an IELTS testing centre and is looking to recruit and train new Examiners. Training will be conducted in September 2008 at UOWD, and the charge will be 700 dirhams per trainee (350 dirhams each for the Writing and the Speaking modules). Successful trainees should be able to easily recoup the training fee once examining commences. As an IELTS examiner you will enjoy interacting and working in a team of professionals. As a certified examiner you can examine anywhere in the world in any approved IELTS test centre. You also get the opportunity to meet diverse candidates and experience testing in a calm and friendly environment. |

If it pans out, don't worry about eating your hat. |

Wasn't able to edit the post above. However, after taking a look at the "Open vacancies . . . Academic (1)" in the left column of the website, I found this:

UOWD is expanding as an IELTS testing centre and is looking to recruit and train new Examiners. Training will be conducted in early June 2009 at UOWD, and the charge will be AED700/- per trainee (AED350/- each for the Writing and the Speaking modules). |
Good Luck |

I must say that I have spoken to these people twice without getting anywhere.
This is the furthest I've gotten though.
I'm getting ready to eat that hat.
Let's see if the application actually gets anywhere.
Thanks GD. I owe you a beer. |

It all depends on the rules for each country. For example IELTS/IDP had schools in Indonesia that taught IELTS courses and provided the examiner had not taught the student for 3 months, he/she could examine the student. As examiners were also teachers and worked at the centre they were naturally given preference over independent examiners or those that worked elsewhere. I used to examine twice a month but examining became exremely sporadic after moving to another school.
In China it is expressly forbidden to actually teach IELTS and examine...its a big no no. The examining takes place independently and is not connected to any school, therefore there is much wider scope to make a decent living from examining alone and many do, especially in Beijing.
You can examine in any country that's in the system once you are qualified but remember different countries have different rules and those that examine and work for the same place will often seem like a closed shop.
Hope that clarifies some issues.
Cheers Mr K
Oh by the way, in many countries you must be responsible for your own tax which might not apply in the ME |

The Chinese system sounds much better.
For the credibility of the IELTS itself. |
