Hiya
This has been addressed at length in these forums, but I'm getting conflicting advice as to the current job market.
I've got a BA, PGCE and a CELTA and want to work in Hanoi. There don't seem to be many jobs advertised outside of Vn right now though. Is this anything to do with the recession?
I'm considering just getting on a plane in August and seeing what I can sort out once I get over there.
Would appreciate an up to date opinion...
Cheers. |

If you are trying to secure a job at an international school, I think it would be best to have one before you go. Most of them are more likely to do their hiring from out of country. With language schools it might be easier to find a job in Vietnam, but some of them also hire from out of country. You appear to be well qualified so if there is a job open you could land it. Good Luck! |

I agree with mach114. Language schools often prefer to hire someone who is in-country so that they can have a face-to-face meeting with the applicant, and job openings sometimes occur with little warning, so it would be an advantage to be present and available at short notice. One key is to have enough money on arrival to survive for a few months while you build up hours, since it's more likely that you'd get only part-time work at first. Your qualifications look fine and you should get something quickly, but there are other factors such as your appearance and attitude, so there are no guarantees. |

how do you reckon this'd fair with someone who doesn't have a CELTA, rather a BA in languages (German and Spanish, useless for out there, I know) and an 80hr online plus 6hrs observational.
Am I naive in thinking that I'll be able to find work when out there? Part-time to begin with is fine, I'll be going with savings.
ps, this is with the intention of working in either Hanoi or HCM... |

Many thanks for the responses.
I've been out of the classroom working in development roles for a few years. In my experience, international schools want recent experience. I prefer the language school route.
I take it that there are no issues securing a work permit 'in country' should I find a job after I arrive? I'm a Brit, so I gather it's a wee bit easier getting docs authenticated etc etc??
Again, thanks for the replies.. |
