Hi,
Has anyone been to Guiyang, Guizhou province?
Any advice please?
Is pollution bad there?
Thanks in advance |

Friends of mine worked in Guiyang in the late 90s and loved it. I visited and thought it was great. Guizhou is quite poor so salaries might not be very good, but the people were very friendly and the students keen. The city itself is not very clean but is modernising quickly (like the rest of China). The best thing about Guiyang is the travel. If you like getting to some of the more unusual parts of China, there are lots of great trips to minority areas, but you have to be able to deal with local transport. If you are getting similar offers (salary and conditions), Guiyang should get points for being a bit unusual. Being a bit more isolated, you are also more likely to make Chinese friends rather than rely only on expat contacts. It would probably be better to hear from someone who has been there more recently, but there's my 2 cents. |

To be sure, Guiyang is not a scenic place though its surroundings are. The city itself is fast modernising but that also means it's a permanent construction site.
Its climate is relatively pleasant, no extremes, though it enjoys extremely few sunny days due to permanent smog conditions.
Some 120 kms away is CHina's greatest waterfall, a major tourist trap.
If you accept a job there, don't allow them to underpay you! |
