Hi.
I'm planning to go to Tokyo one way (I have a permanent visa) in mid-January from Chicago.Does anyone know of some reliable discount travel agencies? Seems I get a wave of spam when I do a net search.
I appreciate it. |

Have you tried expedia.ca cheapoair.com or priceline.com? They're the ones I use most often. |

Thanks. Seems like in the U.S. you have to pay straight up, unlike No. 1 or HIS where you can just make reservations. |

Most online travel agencies (and airlines) require instant ticketing (or within 72 hours after making the reservation) if booked from the US or Canada.
JTB has offices in the US (as of last check they had one in a Mitsuwa in the suburbs of Chicago) and sometimes offer specials. If it's too expensive just buy a round-trip and throw away the other half.
Personally, having numerous relatives who worked at airlines (and knowing how travel agencies work), I stay away from HIS/No 1 like the plague. They had some scam a few years ago with getting people to pay for their tickets (in full), then not ticketing and waiting to see if the fuel surcharge went up (if it did they would ring people and tell them they had to get more money) or down (in which case they pocketed the difference). |

In addition, HIS at one time didn't offer specials to foreigners, so basically they overbilled them. |

I get my wife to buy tickets in Japan.
Compared to HIS it cost 12,000 yen less per ticket.
I find smaller travel agents can offer good deals.
Hankyu travel in Osaka is good too. |

My wife buys from HIS or whichever agency tends to have the best price. We have also bought from an HIS agency outside the country two times as it was cheaper than buying the same ticket in Japan. A little more hassle with international calls to the London or New York office (and having to get the tickets mailed ( they weren't doing e-tickets for some reason), but when it's sometimes at about half the price, who am I to complain ? |
