Hi everyone
I am taking the Celta at the end of June and just wanted some advice. I really want to work in London on a perm basis when I finish the course. Is there much permanent work in London or is it more summer stuff. Any advice is very much appreciated.
Thanks

90% of the jobs I'm seeing advertised on eslbase at the moment are in the UK, especially the South, and most are permanant posts (speaks volumes about the UK when most TEFL jobs are in a supposedly English speaking country!! ).
Of course, the pay is no where near enough to live on in London, even for hugely qualified DOS positions. |

CELTA is a decent qual, but remember that it's entry level. The good jobs aren't just going to open up to you in a market like the UK.
Hard to live on entry level wages in London, in my opinion.
A lot of people I know are finding it hard enough with higher quals.
Best,

There isn't much permanent work in the UK really. Most of the jobs are short contract.
There is work in EFL in London over the winter but there are fewer jobs than there are in summer. A lot of TEFL teachers will do the summer and then go abroad so it's not just a case folk getting fired after the summer rush but as a newly qualified teacher you might find your contract not renewed after August. |

I think this is really true, frighteningly so, at newbie level. But there ARE permanent jobs- just not for minimal qualifications.
I have friends that do alright in the UK market. DELTA, MA TESOL, decade of experience abroad kind of friends.
It's a really hard market in the UK- you need the right quals and experience to break into anything good!
