I worked as an English language teacher in Huijia college (which is beside the school) from September 2006 to June 2008. 2 contracts. They provided me with accommodation which was upgraded in 2007. All foreign teachers from both Huijia school and the college, got their own accommodation. It's pretty good. When they upgraded the accommodation they put in built-in kitchens into the new apartments. Each teacher gets his/her own apartment of course.
Huijia school is kinda rural. A little outside of Changping city (population about 500,000 last I checked). If you don't mind that, then that's fine. You can buy a bike to cycle into the town or you can take a taxi for 15RMB (last I checked) from the school gate to McDonalds in Changping city centre. Changping, in turn, is about 50 minutes or so by the 909 bus, I think, to Jishuitan which is beside the number 2 subway line in Beijing city centre.
My first year as an English language teacher in Huijia college, I got paid 5,500 RMB per month. I think the salary is a little higher in Huijia school. In the college, you teach mostly 19,20 and 21 year old young adults. In the school, you're teaching kids of course. Maybe 6,500 RMB + per month for your first year to teach in the school.. If you have a doctorate degree, you'll get a little more. Depends on what subject(s) you'll be teaching in the school I suppose. If you have lots of experience, you'll get more money. One guy I knew there, who was working there since 1999 I think, was getting 10,500 rmb per month. I think he had the top salary of all the foreign teachers there at the time.
I think the place is pretty okay. They don't work you to the bone. Hours are reasonable. Contract is reasonable. Refund your flight ticket and all that. I got a maximum of 5 days off work per semester and still get paid my full monthly salary. The Foreign Affairs Office were pretty okay with me. I can't sing my praises about it too effusively but it could be a lot worse. The students I taught though were terrific and my fellow teachers were great. On the whole, it was a good experience teaching there. |
