I just got an offer from a university in Oman. This position is around Muscat. The salary is not great (but not bad, either). My question is about housing. They are giving me 250 OR for housing (I'm assuming I'm on my own when it comes to finding my own place to live). All replies are welcome.

Housing in Muscat can be very expensive! 250 OMR may be a tough go. When you say around Muscat do you mean Muscat? Where is your posting? Prices vary a great deal according to area.

Definitely a factor... Muscat runs from Old Muscat for many many miles along the coast to the airport and beyond. It is a governate (county/state) as well as a city. Prices and availability will vary widely. Even if your employer doesn't find you a place, they should at least give you some advice. Hopefully someone will come on and speak to the supply situation these days. It was very tight the year after the cyclone.

I agree with jdl that the amount is a bit low especially if you are a family.

I'm still deciding, but I am probably going to accept a post in Sohar. I am looking for a one-bedroom place for only me. Thanks for your input.

If you choose Sohar, you will have a wide array of choices because of over-building here. There are some nice new flats on the corniche that start from 200 rial per month. It's a good time to be house-hunting in Sohar.
