Quick question for anyone who is familiar with the inner workings of the JET program -- I have applied for the JET program quite a few times, and was accepted on the third try, but turned it down due to a medical issue. I've applied a few times after that and was turned down by them each time. I'm wondering if it is even worth applying for again, because it seems like I'm blacklisted with them for turning them down that time. I've also heard that JET does not look favourably at repeat applicants. Is anyone aware of such a hiring practice or is it just hearsay?

informed input is welcomed.

Short answer: no.

I turned them down in 2005 and was shortlisted in 2008. Which position are you going for, ALT or CIR? Have you taken more Japanese courses or a TEFL certification course?

Actually, regarding repeat applicants, I have heard the reverse to be true.

cvmurrieta, I have not taken formal Japanese language courses since I last taught in Japan, about two years ago. I had TEFL certification that I gained before I left.

OK, at what stage were you turned down by them each time? Before or after the interview? Some further questions: Have you been involved in any Japanese cultural organizations since being back home?

I must say that I am a bit perplexed from what you have told as to why you haven't been shortlisted (or at least made an alternate) since then.

What consulate or embassy did you apply through? Some on here will say that JET is looking for teachers with more "qualifications"; but in my case in Miyagi, I think it is ESID. I met quite a few ALTs coming over last year who were just fresh college grads (nothing wrong that!)

BTW, have you been checking out the "Applying for JET" on I Think I'm Lost? Don't check out the cesspool that is the website known as Big Daikon for JET Application procedures (I only mess around on BD when I am extremely bored and ITIL is very slow)

Is there any way you can apply through another designated city? Like if you live in Ottawa but your parents live in Toronto, then you could interview from either one, just make sure you can go there to interview.

I'm pretty sure that the answer is no, "JET" is not blacklisting you (unless you turned them down after already getting a placement, in which case I'm pretty sure they ARE blacklisting you, it specifically says that will happen in the application package). But "JET" is not interviewing you, nor is "JET" reviewing your application. Another issue is that if you told them that the medical issue that was preventing you from going three years ago had ANYTHING to do with psychological or emotional problems, then that could very definitely cause you to be blacklisted. They say that it won't but realistically, they are trying to judge in a relatively short period if you are going to be able to 'hack' living in a very rural area for a year.

Actually, if you do a search at bigdaikon, then you WILL find good information about applying to JET (look in the incoming section). I know, because I've posted in a few threads. I haven't been to bigdaikon in well over a year. I stopped because it's such a cesspool.

I was turned down before the interview.

I wish I could say I could. It might be the case that you can just apply through another city and just show up for the interview there.

As for the turning them down, it happened before the interview, never got to the placement stage. I told them I couldn't make it to the interview, but I don't remember if I told them why. The medical issue was disclosed in my application.

Its not something I was planning on for the near future, it may be best just to look around for other options.

Thanks for the replies all! Smile

Ha ha! cvmurrieta, I am waiting for your book to come out. I will buy it and read it.

I waited until year two to make suggestions for making things at my school more efficient. My first year was spent just observing and following along, but...this of course is apples and oranges between your CIR situation and my ALT situation.

Here it comes...wait for it, everybody:

ESID

Hang in there, cvmurrieta. One more month. Sorry for the cliche: if it hasn't killed you, it will make you stronger. Confused Wink Cool

FC,

No, I have never made suggestions how to make things better. In fact, I have taken the subservient role and just done as I have been told. I have just felt that the CIRs in my office haven't been utilized efficiently and have been given tasks way beyond our abilities at times. A co-worker and I were given a contract concerning a major American company, the prefecture, and a university in this area. While we agreed to translate it to the best of our ability in Japanese, both of us pleaded with our group leader to have a lawyer and a professional translator work on it as well. Our concerns were brushed aside. Needless to say, I was shocked at the unprofessionalism shown by a government office in this matter.

I wished I had changed to the ALT position back in December when we had a chance. Then I'd be securely ensconced in this prefecture rather than scrambling around to get whatever scraps I can.
