I've always been interested in teaching English abroad but was never in a position to actually do it until recently. I recently graduated from university but the start date of my finance job was pushed back until summer 2010. Although at first this seemed like a great opportunity to teach abroad, after doing some research, I've become somewhat discouraged at how difficult it is to find placements with contract durations less than one year.

Ideally I would like to start in September 2009 and end no later than the end of May 2010. A shorter duration is fine, but it really can't be any longer. I did some searching on this forum and found some threads but nothing with any solid guidance.

Is my only hope to search the job board for shorter term listings? I contacted several recruiters, all of whom said that they only do one year contracts. Are there any recruiters known for their ability to place people for shorter durations?

I would strongly prefer not to break a contract prematurely. I am also aware I will lose a lot of potential benefits (airfare, severance) by having a shorter contract.

There's a company in Japan called Westgate Corporation. They do short-term contracts.

there are lots of places in Europe and Asia that typically offer contracts for a school year, which is usually 10 months.

Most European contracts are Sept/June. They don' t normally end in May.
Yes, there are many private language schools that hire on this basis.
