Good feature article about young expats looking for job opportunities in business-related fields other than teaching. Good news for teachers, too, as China's growing economy means more jobs in education across the board. Business, as the saying goes, is booming!

From the article. Something most of us knew all along:

Quote:
Sarabeth is always taking initiative and thinking what we can do, he said, while I think the more standard Chinese approach is to take orders. He says the difference is rooted in the educational system. In Chinese schools students are encouraged to be quiet and less outspoken; it fosters a culture of listening more than initiating.

This is directly related to class size. If there are 60 students, and a 60 minute period, the students get one minute of speaking each, if the teacher says nothing.....

Cut this down to 15 students, and you are getting somewhere.

We can therefore count on witnessing a growing influx of unsuitable, oncompetent and unmotivated foreign 'teachers' that will help send the rate on the grouchiness barometer up.

One thing for sure - those who don't hit the grade, and need extra funds to move on - will start moving into the lowest echelon of ex-pat employment - the EFL world.
With a glut of attractive Americans - especially in the big cities of commerce like GZ - some could start feeling worried for their work - especially non-native speakers.
No wonder NobleIg sounds a little irritated

Who said anything about attractive Americans? Don't you know they're the most obese people in the world?

Either you were dreaming that their academic backgrounds are commensurate with their obesity.

Or you were saying more planes have to come down from the skies before they hit their destinations.

I'm surprised the New York Times would even print this story. There are no statistics. It's a strong of anecdotes about young people working in China. Where's the news? Who's to say if it's a growing trend or not?

What a load of "poppy cock!"

Nothing to do with Esl teaching. Of course the Chinese economy is getting bigger and a few more Americans are coming to the shores of the Chinese Peoples Republic. But coming to China is not just an economic necessity it takes a little determination and a well thought out mental plan.
