Hi

I'm thinking about teaching in China, and have had a few offers. I'm being pressed (but not too much) into signing a faxed contract for one school, while I still remain unsure if it's the school I want. I don't think the school would wait indefinitely for my decision. The school has a copy of my passport.

What would happen to me if I signed a contract for this school, then found that one of the other schools was really the right choice? Would I be legally bound to honour the contract. Would I be stopped from taking any future job at another Chinese school?

I feel quite guilty asking this kind of question, because it isn't something I would normally do.

Thank you for any help.

I don't think you would have much problem getting out at this
point. Don't let any school pressure you. One sign of a bad
school with poor management is the need for YOU to do everything
ASAP. Trust me, they usually don't feel the same about their
obligations to you. See the "Breaking the CONTRACT!" post
for an example.

If you haven't already done so, you can post more details about
the schools and the offers and might get some comments.

It isn't until you have your work visa in hand that you could have
problems walking away without coming to some kind of agreement
to get a "release letter" from your employer, from what I understand.

Some people have broken contracts many times and have much
more knowledge than I do, but I wouldn't worry that it would
prevent you from ever working in China again.

#1, amen.
I can't recommend that anyone ever break a contract....certainly not lightly or trivally, and perhaps not just because you get a better offer. There's ALWAYS a better offer.

However, sometimes conditions in schools here are completely intolerable. Good faith negotiating and complaining gets you nowhere. When this happens, I personally think you're within your rights to pull the ripcord and bail out. Yes, your agreement SHOULD mean something...but you also should never be asked to sign on for a year of abuse and dishonest treatment. Getting out should be done, and can be done, when this happens to you...and if you are in China long enough, it WILL happen to you.
