Hi, I am 27 years old from New Zealand. I am currently working in the recruitment industry. I have an ESOL cert and am enjoying home tutoring. I would like to complete a CELTA course in Auckland in Jan 2010 and then move to Thailand. I would have accomodation in Bangkok when I arrive. I do not have a degree. I would like to teach english to adults overseas for 1 - 2 years before returning to NZ to study.
How realistic is this? Am I going to be able to find a job?
Any ideas/advise would be much appreciated. Cheers

Hey passion, without a degree you wont be working legally, but many aren't so its not crucial. If you want to teach adults, the CELTA is a definite bonus. If the economy picks up you should be ok, but right now, things are a bit slow in Thailand especially in the adult/corporate/business arena.

Are you close to a degree? If so, just finish it and it will open so many more doors in ESL/EFL and travelling.

A recruiting company called JP Education Service advertises that they hire teachers with no degree, but I would bet that they dont get work permits for them. I dont know if they are any good, sorry.

The Work Permits are obtained regardless of degree or not. It is called the "Nonthaburi Project" and is a Thai Education Ministry initiative to take the English language to the poorer schools.

Although JP do the recruiting I believe the contract is actually with Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok. (Thailands No. 1)

The CELTA is for sure a good start.

Although the ESL market here in Thailand is quiet at the moment, people with the right personality to teach Thai adults are still very much in demand. The corporate market can also be well paid and rewarding.
