I've been applying to a lot of teaching jobs and finally got a bite from a company in Sao Paulo. While it's not my first choice in respects to cities I had envisioned myself living in, the temptation of a secure job is pretty strong. I had never seen myself in a large city, so I haven't really given Sao Paulo a chance.

The job supplies free room and board, so therefore only pays R800 a month. I asked but haven't received word as to whether or not they will sponsor a visa for me.

Any thoughts, o wise Brazilian community?

Sao Paulo is huge. If you are not into big cities than I think Sao Paulo might be a challenging place to get used to one. IMHO Sao Paulo has certiain benefits compared to other big Brazilian cities - unlike Rio or cities in the Nordeste it is relatively safe. Things kind of work in Sao Paulo - like the public transportation.

The bad points are that Sao Paulo can be a kind of expensive place to live - most expensive in Brazil. Free room and board would definitley help. The thing I cant stand about SP is the traffic. It can be otherworldly - think worse than Bangkok. I have spent hours and hours on buses trying to get a short distance to see clients or get to school and then gave up, tried to get a cab - cab couldnt move either so i got out and walked the 6 km. S.P. does have a metro but there are really only 4 lines for one of the largest cities in the world.

Does free room and board mean living with a family? - cool if you are into that. Great for your Portuguese.

If the school wont sponsor a visa (which I dont think they will as most schools in Brazil wont pay the money to do so) you will most likely need to come on a tourist visa - which is good for 6 months.

The school might demand that you be "available" most of the day - which might make it hard to supplement your income with other work if you wished.

If you are into a cultural experience and spending some time in Brazil while making some cash to pay your way - Id say go for it.

If you are into making some cash I dont think it would be very lucrative.
