Is there a national approved curriculum in the UAE for English? If so, is it something that they publish themselves or a set of texts that they buy? Any comments on this would be appreciated. |

Hi haopengyou,
I too have been looking for the information about the curriculum at the K-2 level.
I spoke to a Dean of Education at one of the universities in Abu Dhabi and she said that getting your hands on any curriculum material is almost impossible. She related that as a teacher educator she has direct contact with curriculum planners for the ADEC and still has not received any information, which obviously makes it difficult to train new teachers.
She did say that they have 'guaranteed' to have it for the new school year!?
I guess we'll see.
** I was wondering if I could you indulge my curiosity a little more and tell me a little more about the salary situation, as I am interviewing for a position this Monday. **
I hope this has given you a little more info about the curriculum.
Oh, BTW... I was speaking with someone from Teachaway who said that they are working with people from Australia to create a curriculum so you could always take a look at the Australian curriculum. Here's the link:
http://www.dest.gov.au/audience_segments/for_teaching_staff/for_school_teachers.htm
Hope I'll see you there,

Hi Carlen,
I was wondering if that is the curriculum that will be used to teach science, math and english next year? I'm just wondering because in my VERY QUICK assessment of the curriculum it seems a little advanced for learners who do not have english as a first language. But like I said it was a really fast look.

Good point, carlen! Trying to work with local teachers who can't read the Curriculum document. That gives others some idea of what it's like to introduce the Curriculum into a school at the level of the student. |

Wow Carlen your quick with the responses!! Thanks.
I am very familiar with adapting materials as I am currently working with 'Ab-Ed' as we call it, or with First Nations (Aboriginal) students at the moment. I teaching a new math curriculum that is very language based and therefor almost impossible for these students. Actually, I don't want to say impossible because I firmly believe that if the material can be adapted to fit my students they can learn the material.
Yeah... I can see that being very difficult to teach when also working as a team with teachers who work from a teacher-centered approach.
Other than being 'advanced', I like the curriculum as it seems very familiar to a student- centered model here in BC.

Sorry all for the very poor spelling... that should have been 'you are' very quick Carlen, not 'your' quick. You may be but I won't go there. |

New South Wales designed the ADEC curriculum. Have they adapted it for use in UAE schools or just used the same syllabus? |

Just a note for you... up in the upper right corner of each message you post there is a button that say 'edit' - it lets us go in and repair the worst of our "typos."
