I am planning on teaching in the UAE next year, I am currently in korea and it has been great. I want a new challenge and adventure so I saw the UAE offers teachers a pretty good package. Is it what they say it is? Free housing, airfare, etc? Any info would be helpful.
thanks!! |

Check some of the previous posts asking similar questions - it is all dependent on your qualifications what kind of package you might get offered. Here's one that pops up when you search "qualifications uae"
http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/viewtopic.php?t=70999&highlight=uae+qualifications
There are many others that have similar questions - they usually come up every 2 - 3 weeks. If you search and come back with more specific questions, we'll be able to assist you better. |

Ambitious much? This is not Korea. You either have post-grad creds or be prepared to be abused...

Don't mind NTCBA. It is just that about every 2 weeks some teacher in Korea, Japan, or China drops in and then says "I hear we can earn xxx, is it true?"
so a condensed version
1. If you have an MA in applied linguistics/TESL/TESOL (or an MA in a direct field such as an MBA, Chemistry, engineering, Math) AND 3 to 5 years of teaching experience you can have a GREAT job teaching for the local universities with a salary in the range of $3500 to $5000 (US) per month to start, with airfare for your family, educational allowances for your kids, free housing, 2 months off with pay over the summer, free medical benefits, a gratuitity which is equal to 1 months pay for every year worked and no taxes.
OR
2. You have a bachelors degree and are a certified teacher AND have 3 to 5 years of teaching experience you can have a pretty good job working for the international schools/english speaking schools earning $2500 to $4000 (US)($5000 in the best schools) a month with housing paid for, airfare, summers off with pay.
BUT
if you just have a college degree and a TEFL cert, you will find it a much harder place to come and just "drop" in and work. If those are your credentials, stay in Korea, China or Japan. you will have a much larger employment pool, a better salary, and a much more diverse and interesting cultural experience. |

Sorry about the lack of info. I am a certified teacher(USA) with two years teaching experience (1 in the USA and 1 overseas) and I will be getting my TEFL certification this year, the 120 hour certification online. (bridge TEFL) Does this help any about what kind of job I can get in the UAE?
Also, what is the difference between TESL and TEFL?
I hope this helps, thank you again!!

You may be able to get something with one of the internatioanl schools that offers a US curriculum. You do not qualify for the more desirable tertiary positions.
Sorry if this sounds harsh, but shouldn't an EFL teacher know the difference between TESL and TEFL? |

jaf1968, find the TeachAway website and apply to ADEC through them. That's the very best you'll do in the UAE. |

Stick to Korea and keep googling, John.
BTW, the term '120 hours' is only meaningful when it refers to face to face tuition and observed teaching practice.
It means nothing 'online'.
If it did mean anything then I guess a 'teacher' with a slower connection might rack up 240 hours and be twice as qualified as one with a fast connection. |

Well, since no one else seems to want to enlighten you:
"TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) is also sometimes referred to as EFL (English as a Foreign Language). As that "foreign" is considered at least by some to be politically incorrect, the term ELT (English Language Teaching) is sometimes preferred, though ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) is now rapidly coming into fashion.
In the US, TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is much more widely used than TEFL.
Confusingly, the acronym TESOL also refers to the American professional association: Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages.
For all practical purposes, however, these terms mean virtually the same thing.
TEFL and TESL
A distinction is sometimes drawn between TEFL and TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language), and hence also between EFL and ESL.
TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) involves teaching people, usually in their own countries, who want to use English for business, leisure, travel, etc.
TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) involves teaching immigrants in English-speaking countries."
http://www.ihes.com/bcn/tt/tefl_tesol.html
In other words, it's trivial. I think you could teach splendidly for many years and go to your grave without knowing this "distinction" and be
none the worse.
I've done both TEFL and TESL. The main difference resides not so much in the teacher as in the students, who, in ESL, are surrounded by English once they leave the classroom. This usually makes for better learning conditions.
Another difference is often in the students' motivation. ESL students tend to be more highly motivated, often taking classes although they have a job or jobs and family. They know it's probably the only way they're going to improve their standard of living.
This is not always the case with EFL students.
But, in my experience, at least, the actual teaching is not all that different.
Regarding content, I'd say that ESL courses are generally more broad-based whereas EFL courses are usually more narrowly defined.
Regards,
John |

I just got a job teaching with ADEC in the public system. I have 11 years of experience and a Masters degree and I am making more than was quoted here. We also get housing, airfare, and health care.
ADEC is still hiring, as far as I know...as mentioned, take a look at www.teachaway.com if you are interested. |

I think you missed my point, that is the MINIMUM requirements (and ususlly the salary for that MINIMUM requirement is in the range I quoted)
Now if you would care, what is ADEC paying for an instructor with an MA and 10+ years of experience? |

I just accepted a first grade teaching position with the ADEC, and I am Masters plus 12 years...they offered 19,500 AED with housing, airfare, utilities, performance bonus, driver, staff, pool maintenence and a trip to Tangiers...(no, just kidding about the staff, pool maintenence and Tangiers! )...still, a pretty good deal, I think...and the chance to be in on the ground floor of (I hope) real educational change... |
